Uganda

Electricity Generation Company Ltd was incorporated in March 2001 under the

Companies Act, 2012 on the basis of the Public Enterprises Reform and

Divestiture Act, Cap 98 and Electricity Act, Cap 145.  UEGCL is wholly owned by the Government of

the Republic of Uganda. UEGCL’s key role is to – carry on the business of

electric power generation and sale within Uganda or for export to neighbouring

countries; build, operate and maintain Electricity Generation Plants; monitor

the operation and maintenance of its Concessioned Assets – Nalubaale and Kiira

Power Stations; provide Technical Support as and when required by the

Government of the Republic of Uganda through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral

Development; Implement Flagship Hydropower Plant Projects of Karuma (600MW) and

Isimba (183MW; organize, support, encourage and maintain training facilities in

technical and related fields, amongst others.


Job Summary: The Generation

Manager will be responsible for general supervision of all phases of plant

operations including: generation levels, quality (reliability,

availability& efficiency), maintenance, stock management etc. The incumbent

will also be responsible for the analysis of workforce requirements and

coordination of the hiring and training of personnel. The Generation Plant

Manager will oversee the responsible for preparation and submission to top

management the annual plant budget for the general UEGCL Corporate plan and

execution. He / she will also ensure that Operation and Maintenance team work

closely to ensure generation meets reliability, availability and profitability

targets of UEGCL.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 


·        
Provide leadership for the successful day-to-day

operation of the facility.


·        
Ensure the efficient and cost effective resource

utilization (water use per kilowatt of power generated, generation cost per

Kilowatt, generation key parameters such as MTBF, MTTR, and MTTW) etc.


·        
Actively monitor operation expenses and research

ways to reduce costs while maintaining product quality.


·        
Keenly review and carry out generation projections

using projected water availability/hydrological conditions.


·        
Maintain inventory levels and control flow of

necessary spares and consumables from suppliers to ensure high plant

availability and reliability without compromising cash flow.


·        
Maintain and support a high standard of safety and

housekeeping program, including ISO accreditation programs and timely

communication initiatives. Conduct performance appraisals and provide coaching

and guidance to all plant employees.


·        
Encourage and actively promote operating in a continuous

improvement environment. Remove generation constraints; allocate human and

material resources and direct generation employees to attain established goals.


·        
Communicate with Top Management, Research and

Development, Training School/Institute as well as UEGCL personnel to develop

new generation vision and strategies.


·        
Maintain security system and access readers.


·        
Perform any other duties assigned by supervisor from

time to time.


Qualifications, Skills and

Experience: 


·        
The applicant must be a graduate in Electrical,

Mechanical, Civil, Hydraulic or related engineering discipline – with Honors

Degree.


·        
Possession of post graduate qualifications in

Hydropower, Business, and Management; and affiliation to relevant professional

bodies will be an added advantage.


·        
At least seven years’ progressive experience in a

key leadership/management role at a power generation plant.


·        
Prior exposure and experience in budgeting/expense management

with a basic understanding of financial and accounting practices.


·        
Prior experience/broad understanding of safety

systems and Risk Management.


·        
Broad working knowledge of Generation Plant safety

and enforcement of safety rules and policies.


·        
Demonstrated understanding of the principles and

applications associated with power plant Operation and Maintenance engineering.


·        
Excellent planning and organizational skills, with

the ability to balance generation and maintenance needs.


·        
Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.


·        
Broad knowledge and understanding of corporate and

industry practices, standards and regulations


·        
Proficiency in Computer Engineering packages such as

Project Spreadsheet etc.
