Job Description
Position Title : Agronomist (Rice and Maize)
Location : Kampala
Reports to (Position) :
I. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES (KEY DELIVERABLES)
1. Regularly review the activities in the value chain of Rice and maize in Uganda and worldwide to identify challenges and opportunities for agronomy research
2. Establish linkages with other players /stake holders that will enhance the successful implementation of the various technology generation and dissemination research activities
3. Acquire climatic /weather and soil status data for trial sites and any other areas that will assist in decision making on the agro-ecological suitability of growing rice and maize in different areas of Uganda
4. Identify nutrient needs of the various rice/maize based cropping systems (plant nutrition) and develop corrective Pleasures to address the deficiencies
5. Actively participate in studies to determine relationships between crop/field management practices or /and environmental factors and the occurrence of adverse conditions on rice/maize such as diseases, pests, viruses, and any unfavorable physiological conditions with the purpose of correcting such occurrences.
6. Communicate project and research results to strategic partners accordingly.
7. Investigating soil type responses to a management technique thereby implementing it based on the results.
8. Responsible for developing newer methods of soil conservation.
9. Investigating problem sources on poor soil and water and determine the effects.
10. Studying soil characteristics and classifying it on the basis of geographic location, properties landscape position.
11. Any other duties that might be assigned by the management from time to time.
II. CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION
(A) Possess good skills in experimental design, data collection, analysis, interpretation and report writing.
(B) The candidate should have good project management skills
(C) Demonstrated ability to work in a team; strong interpersonal skills
III. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION
1. The applicant should hold a Master’s Degree in Crop Science or Biological Science with a bias in Agronomy. Possession of a PhD is an added advantage.
2. At least Five years’ working experience in rice or maize.
