The Infectious

Diseases Institute (IDI) is an international non-profit organization which is a

partnership of infectious diseases and public health specialists. The overall

objective of the IDI is to strengthen health systems with strong emphasis on

Infectious Diseases, through Research and Capacity Development. IDI has five

operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention,

Care and Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory services (provided

through a partnership with the Makerere University – John Hopkins University

Core Lab) and Outreach.


IDI, in

partnership with its funders and other stakeholders has received funding to

roll out a new pilot project aimed at scaling up pediatric and Adolescent HIV

care in the three districts of Kampala, Hoima and Kibaale over a two year

period. It is hoped that this will in turn help close the pediatric

Antiretroviral Therapy gap and improve HIV services for pediatric and

adolescent clients.


Job Summary: The Laboratory

Technologist will offer lab-related technical support to patients at various

supported Health facilities.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 


·        
Build the capacity of staff to provide Quality HIV

testing services in selected facilities and communities


·        
The incumbent will be building capacity to provide

quality Lab tests (CD Cell Counts, Chemistry & Hematology Tests, Viral Load

and DNA PCR Tests) required for diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of clients.


·        
Adapting National standards and Maturation System

based on the principles the Lab Quality Management System (Organization,

infrastructure, equipment, sample collection management process control

(QA/QC), documentation, infection control and safety, assessment of the labs

customer care, process improvement and information management) and link the

standards to the Laboratory strengthening program


·        
Responsible for developing a QA/QC system (internal

quality control system and external quality control system and standard

operating procedures and manuals) and ensuring their use in selected

facilities.


·        
Establishing and monitoring a Supply Chain

Management System and ensure timely quantification and ordering of stocks for

target labs.


·        
The incumbent will support selected Labs to send

samples and receive results from the Central Public Health laboratories.


·        
Mentor and train facility staff on how to collect

and store DBS samples for DNA PCR and viral load testing.


·        
Perform any other duties as assigned from time to

time


Qualifications, Skills and

Experience: 


·        
The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelors Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized educational

institution.


·        
Additional training in GLP


·        
A minimum of two to three years experience working in a laboratory recognized to be applying Good laboratory

practices.


·        
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to

interact with other team members


·        
Highly self-motivated, innovative and capable of

meeting deadlines


·        
Willingness to travel to supported sites supporting

lab services.


·        
Excellent communication skills.


·        
Computer literacy skills with knowledge of Microsoft
