Mercy Corps is
an international non-profit organization which implements high-quality,
analytical development programmes in very difficult places. Mercy Corps has
been operating in Uganda since 2006. It has and continues to implement programs
in Acholi and Karamoja sub regions. Mercy Corps is taking a community-led,
market driven approach to address poverty and food insecurity needs through
interventions that get to the root causes and contributing factors of economic
vulnerability. Donors include the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID), the European Commission (EC), United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA), Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC), Walmart Foundation,
Nike Foundation, DFID as well as other private donations.
Girl Effect
University (GEU) is a thriving global network of development practitioners who
deliver solutions that meet the unique needs of adolescent girls. Mercy Corps
has recently become the manager of Girl Effect University, an existing mobile,
capacity building services delivery initiative that provides workshops,
coaching services, and on-going learning experiences through an active learning
community/network.
Job Summary: The Girl Effect
University GEU Coordinator will steer an integration and expansion planning
process for global, mobile capacity building support services to development
practitioners. The incumbent will works closely with a core team of
stakeholders. The Mercy Corps Girl Effect University Coordinator will support
in overseeing the transition process, conduct the necessary research, cultivate
funding and stakeholder relationships, and develop strategies and plans for
success in building a quality offering to the world.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
·
The incumbent will conduct research in 5-6 different
business models for offering experiential trainings, tailored coaching and an
engaged and active community. Possible models worth investigating and talking
to include the Springfield Center, SEEP Network, Keeping Children Safe, Acumen,
etc.
·
Work in liaison with key stakeholders and advisory
group to ensure field-based practitioners would use/want/need/pay/support the
model.
·
Expand existing GEU community of practitioners
through developed growth plan.
·
Meet with prospective donors/ clients to pitch GEU
initiative and offerings in Uganda and/or beyond the region.
·
Prepare and submit donor and client proposals and
materials as needed; ensure follow-up to conversations.
·
Steer the capitalizing of key moments to showcase GEU
to potential clients and partners, such as the late October 2015 USAID-hosted
Child and Youth forum in Uganda. Success is having MC present with booth/kiosk
and able to offer capacity building workshop(s) to participants shortly after
the workshop concludes.

Work collaboratively with key stakeholders and
advisory group to finalize funding and implementation model. This would include
implementation and financial plans, and have detailed information such as
pricing for fee for service component, community entry guidelines and rules,
business plan for community growth and expansion into other regional hubs
(three by year three).

Manage transition budget and any additional
resources secured.
·
Work with other MC country and HQ teams to embed GEU
into country and region specific proposals.
·
Build and strengthen working relationships with
stakeholders throughout global community to offer GEU services and build the
practitioner community.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
·
The ideal candidate for the Mercy Corps Girl Effect
University Coordinator should have a minimum of five years of overseas
experience in the area of youth development.
·
The ideal candidate must hold a relevant Master’s
degree in a related field
·
Strong youth education and/or youth curriculum and
capacity building experience.
·
Exceptional organizational skills, demonstrated
ability to convene and coordinate different interest groups to create and build
momentum around an initiative and model.
·
Outstanding writing and verbal communication and
presentation skills.
·
Prior experience in influencing different
stakeholders and building solid working relationships with other teams,
departments and at all levels of an organization.
·
The incumbent should have an entrepreneurial spirit
and experience in working on networks or movements – this is not a project or
program that focuses on one geographic location.
·

Prior experience in preparing and giving
presentations in varying formats (traditional and creative).

organizational initiatives.
·
Passion for youth and/or girl centered programming.
·
High degree of flexibility in a non-hierarchical
environment.
·
Multi-tasker with the proven ability to organize and
prioritize competing priorities.
·
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with
team members of varied work styles, follow procedures, and meet deadlines.
·
Demonstrated flexibility and creativity in planning
and problem solving.
·
Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, take
initiative, and be accountable for results.
·
Ability to understand the larger picture while
remaining focused on the details.
·
Maintaining a sense of humor in stressful
situations.
·
Knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Arabic an advantage
