The

Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) based at

the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe is a bilateral

multi-disciplinary research organization funded by, the Medical Research

Council (UK) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Uganda

under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other

donor agencies. Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS

is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV

infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the revolving

epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and

prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and

worldwide.


Job Summary: The Pharmacist will be in charge of providing

general pharmaceutical care of all participants in each of the clinical

research studies carried out in MRC Masaka


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • In charge of the oversight and training of

    pharmacy staff working in the clinical cohort pharmacy and all clinical

    trials involving investigational products at MRC Masaka.

  • Supervision of quantification, stocking,

    storage and safe dispensing of medicines in the pharmacy.

  • Ensure participation in clinical care of

    patients in research and ensuring adherence of MRC/UVRI clinical trials to

    good pharmacy practice, good clinical practice and the national medicines

    control regulatory requirements.

  • Responsible for developing and updating of

    all relevant pharmacy standard operating procedures and other related

    documents. These may include but not limited to, dispensing guidelines,

    drug packing guidelines, drug destruction guidelines, product tracking and

    prescription guidelines.

  • Daily stock update of all concomitant drugs

    dispensed in the MRC pharmacy and also generation of reports from time to

    time as required.

  • Follow up on the procurement of

    investigational product and other non-concomitant medicines including all

    drug related items for the clinic and laboratory.

  • In charge of ensuring recommended procedures

    are followed for packaging, transportation, delivery and storage of

    investigational product and other medicines according to the

    manufacturer’s guidelines.

  • Responsible for importation, storage,

    dispensing and accountability of investigational product and other

    non-concomitant medicines at the MRC/UVRI pharmacies.

  • Overseeing and supervision of the destruction

    of all study and non-study drugs and products retained after each study including

    expired drugs and ensuring that they are properly disposed of.

  • Supervision and participation in all stock

    taking activities for drugs dispensed at the MRC pharmacy.

  • Carrying out quality control and quality

    assurance of all essential pharmacy documents e.g. drug storage data

    documents.

  • Initiate and contribute to scientific

    publications related to the relevant projects undertaken.

  • Pharmacist has some financial responsibility

    in that he/she verifies quantities of drugs ordered for the facility in

    relation to price and quality.

  • Will supervise and routinely train the

    pharmacy technician and nurses involved in pharmacy activities.

  • Job descriptions should be reviewed on a

    regular basis at the annual appraisal and may be revised after discussion

    and agreement with the line manager.

  • Perform any other duties as required by

    management as regards to pharmacy.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant should at least hold a

    Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from a recognised University. Possession of

    a Post graduate certification in related fields, GPP and GCP certification

    is desired

  • Experience in managing pharmacy in a clinical

    care and clinical research setting.

  • Riding Motorcycles with Class A Riding permit

  • Excellent community liaison skills, Computer

    skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

  • Good writing and oral communication skills
