Uganda Cancer Society

(UCS) is a nationwide umbrella organisation dedicated to eliminating cancer as

a major health problem in Uganda by coordinating all organisations in the fight

against cancer. UCS is also focused on patient support programs and resource

mobilization for various cancer activities at national level.


Job Summary: The

Communications Officer will conceptualize, plan and implement the UCS’s

internal and external communications. The incumbent will work under the

auspices of the Program Director and will assume the responsibility for UCS

representation; donor liaison; fundraising; facilitating the work of UCS

through partner organizations; UCS program development.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 


1.

Communications Management:


·        
The incumbent will manage the day-to-day internal

and external communications and communicating program activities of the Society

including;


·        
Responsible for developing and leading on

implementation of communications strategy


·        
Maintaining a strong brand for the UCS, including

impactful and fit-for-purpose publications, web site, social media and

merchandise


·        
Coordinating media and public affairs activities to

promote the legal and policy positions of UCS, aimed at implementing the UN

Convention on the human rights


·        
The job holder will manage the monitoring of media

and current affairs developments, across a wide range of media and in the

Society itself


·        
Preparing press statements and articles that UCS

issues for internal and external communications


·        
Managing the publication and promotion of UCS

materials, including design and printing


·        
Ensuring that the Society’s communication outputs

are of a high standard, respond to the needs of the target audience, and are

delivered within agreed budget and timelines


·        
Building on existing and develop new relationships

with media, key stakeholders, policy makers, member organizations and others


·        
Providing line-management and support to staff

within the organization


·        
Act in accordance with the objectives and ethos of

the UCS


·        
Undertaking other duties as may be reasonably

required from time to time


2.

Collaboration, Networking, Representation, and Communication:


·        
Build and strengthen linkages, collaboration and

networking with other civil society organizations and government and other

relevant institutions to enhance Uganda Cancer Society visibility and project

activities


·        
Support the Program Director to Represent UCS in

various platforms and maintain positive linkages with government decentralized

departments and other relevant stakeholders with regarding Uganda Cancer

Society activities


·        
Support the Program Director in proposal writing


·        
Lead on fund-raising events and social media

fund-raising


Qualifications, Skills and

Experience: 


·        
The applicant should hold a BA/BSc Degree or

equivalent in media, communications or other relevant subject


·        
Possession of a relevant MA/MSc. Degree in media,

communications or other relevant subject is desired


·        
At least two to three years’ experience in a

communications, marketing or journalist role


·        
Prior experience in project management with a proven

track record of delivering on objectives


·        
Previous experience of developing and implementing

media, advocacy or marketing campaigns


·        
Past exposure and experience of representing an

organization to the public or/and media


·        
Working knowledge and understanding of human rights,

in particular vulnerable persons


·        
Working knowledge of the environment in which

non-governmental organizations operate


·        
Social media fundraising skills are desired


·        
Prior events management experience also desired 


·        
Excellent written and verbal communication and

presentation skills


·        
Keen attention to detail and strong organizational

skills


·        
Ability to work calmly under pressure and within a

small dynamic team


·        
Excellent interpersonal and networking skills


·        
Ability to manage a complex workload and work to

tight deadlines


·        
Computer literacy i.e. proficient in Standard office

ICT skills, including social media


·        
Show interest in learning new skills and sharing

them with others
