UNHCO is a Non-Governmental Organization formed in 1999 whose main goal

is to improve the quality of life of all people in Uganda through a

rights-based approach. UNHCO has received funding from Sida through the Swedish

Embassy in Kampala for the 2nd phase of the Maternal Health Project (MHP) which

is being implemented in 8 districts. The goal of the project is to contribute

to the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality in Uganda.


Job Summary:  The

Accountant will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of UNHCO

financial policies and adherence to controls in the most efficient and accurate

manner.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for budget monitoring and

    supervision ensuring compliance with UNHCO and donor policies and

    guidelines.

  • Responsible for collecting and tracking

    sub grantee reports in the accounting system.

  • Offer technical support and backstopping

    to the Secretariat and implementing partners.

  • Provide support and technical advice to

    the Executive Director.

  • In charge of the verification of posted

    expenditures in accordance with the budgets.

  • Provide capacity building and operational

    support to the Secretariat and IPs to effectively manage project funds.

  • In charge of the preparation and

    submission of timely and quality financial reports as required

  • Verify and code expenditure and internal

    recoveries in accordance with approved work plans and budgets.

  • Responsible for working with VHR member

    organizations to revise and finalize work plans and budgets and ensure

    strict timely compliance to financial guidelines.

  • Generate and ensure timely submission of

    reports and.

  • Prepare and maintain monthly bank

    reconciliation statements.

  • Responsible for annual audit preparing all

    necessary documents and responses.

  • Responsible for filing and ensuring safety

    for financial records

  • Ensure partners submit reports in a timely

    manner.

  • Maintaining bank balances and ensuring

    that expenditure is within approved limits and budgets.

  • Prepare and update charts of accounts.

  • Regularly review accountability from

    accounts assistant and respond to queries.

  • Responsible for up-dating the asset

    register.

  • Carry out other project assignments as may

    be assigned from time to time.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate should hold a

    Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce / Business accounting option with

    professional qualifications (ACCA or CPA). 

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in a

    similar position preferably national NGO with a sub-granting mandate.

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Possess excellent interpersonal and

    communication skills

  • High degree of personal integrity

  • Skills in computerised accounting

    packages;

  • Keen attention to detail

  • Highly result oriented.
