2 Bridge International Academies Job Opportunities - Academy Improvement Manager

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  Work closely with a large group of academies in your territory to ensure that the academies are operating at the highest levels across operations, instruction and finance.  This job role requires a constant presence at the Academies and close interaction with each Academy Manager, as well as Academy Teachers, to ensure that there is continuous bi-directional communication and coaching. The Academy Improvement Managers are accountable for the performance metrics of all of the Academies in your territory, as measured by financial, operational and instructional benchmarks.   In addition to interactions with Academies, the Academy Improvement Manager is expected to build close relationships with the local and District Government officials, as well as the Chief and local community leaders to promote Bridge’s interests. Create and build continuous interactions with parents of the children in the Academy, so as to keep a constant monitor on the pulse of the activities in Academy.  Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  The candidate should be highly dynamic, articulate, organized with an attention to detail. Past exposure and experience in a low cost schooling environment is a plus. Highly capable of a consultative, coaching and mentoring approach to help Bridge Academy Managers improve their performance, but also capable of taking a commanding “no-nonsense” approach to enforce the desired actions as necessary. Manager of the African Water Academy, Africa

Administratively responsible to: Secretary General, African Water Association (AfWA)
Operationally responsible to: The African Water Academy Executive Board
Responsible for: Academic and strategic management of the African water Academy, including managing staff
Location: Kampala , Uganda
Period: Three-year, renewable contract with six-month probation period starting 1st January 2012
Financial benefits: Position includes expatriate benefits with an international salary to be negotiated depending on experience

From its inception in 1980, the African Union of Water Suppliers (UADE), subsequently the African Water Association (AAE/AfWA) has focused on improving governance of public sector water supply and sanitation services. AfWA’s Scientific and Technical Council provided a focus on strengthening utility management, especially technical and financial management.

A great number of capacity building projects are in progress within the African Water Association. The latest project is the Water Operators Partnership Programme, a global and United Nations Organization initiated programme in 2007 entrusted to the AfWA for its implementation on the African continent. The main actions of the WOP are made of Capacity Building programs on a coaching basis among the high performing water utilities with the less performing ones.

AfWA remains committed to supporting capacity building and knowledge exchange between African public, civil society and private water institutions. Building on its support for WOP and various capacity building programs, the African Water Academy provides an opportunity for Africa to focus on improving high-level leadership development amongst African Water Utilities.

The objectives of the African Water Academy

The objectives of the African Water Academy can be summed up in the following items:

To increase the inheritance that is water favoring the exchange of information (techniques, legal, scientific, cultural,) and thematic reflections.To give a training to senior executives and decision makers.To contribute to decision making in water issue, mainly by the organization of seminars, by the initiative and managing studies, by general recommendations so as to sustain a durable development.To provide coaching / mentor services in the reform and the change managementTo ensure a permanent promotion of good governance in the management of water and sanitation sector.To ensure a better management of practitioners’ communities.To promote the education of the society vis à vis the water and sanitation related stakes.To act as group of experts for AfWATo share innovations and experiencesTo learn from the other sectors (experiences sharing)To recommend innovation in education matter about water within training institutions and established professional associations.The Manager of the African Water Academy main responsibilities & duties

The Manager shall be the Managing Director and the Academic Manager of the Academy.

The African Water Academy Manager’s specific responsibilities are grouped under four main categories listed below.

Programmatic and operational

Shall prepare on the basis of the principle of planning and budgeting based on the results, his working program project academic programme ( course content and structure), and financial estimate, annual reports and financial statements and submit them to the Executive Body for approval.Shall submit all his programs for approval to the Executive Body, draw the detailed plans for the carrying out of these programme approved and carry on their execution.Shall ensure that the strategic operating plan of the Academy includes measures to improve success and satisfaction level, with emphasis placed on teaching/learning and outcome assessment.Shall initiate and manage strategic relationships between the African Water academy and academic and research institution in Africa an around the worldShall appoint and manage staff members of the African Water Academy in accordance with the administrative and legal applicable disposals, recruit other staff members of the Academy such as the consultants and assignment persons or under contracts ones.The personnel recruitment is done at the right periodShall Organize and prepare Executive Board meetings, draft the Agenda and proceedings, and follow up on the implementation of decisions.Shall coordinate and synchronize the operations of the African Water Academy with those of the AfWA. In that respect, the Manager will stay in close contact with the Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council and the Secretary General of the AfWA.Develop clear operational procedures for the African water AcademyFinancial

Mobilise funding resources for the African Water Academy under the direction of AfWA leadership and the Secretary General and based on a 3-year business plan approved by the Academy Executive BoardShall receive the funds and carry out expenses according to financial regulations of the Academy in order to guarantee an effective and economic financial administration.Ensure that projects are implemented in a cost-effective manner.Provide quarterly financial statements to the Academy Executive Board and Secretary General.Follow-up with donors on the disbursement of fundingCommunication

Promote the African Water Academy within Africa to secure the participation of utilities and other stakeholders in the programme activities and both within Africa and outside the region to encourage more financial partners to join the programme and for learning between regions.Disseminate knowledge on good practices.Ensure that all stakeholders receive regular communications, in addition to the annual reportDevelop and maintain strong relations and efficient coordination with various partners, including donors, governments, participating utilities, and other partners.Monitoring and evaluation

Shall establish monitoring systems and outcome assessments that enable the analysis of key performance objectives and identifies business model trends and plan for improvement.Report quarterly and annually to the Executive Board on progress, achievements, and challengesSelection criteria & qualification

The applicant for the position of Manager of the African Water Academy should have extensive academic and administrative experience and potential including the following:

Teaching Fellows

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Teach under the careful mentorship of an experienced master teacher.
* Tutor individual students or study groups
* Involvement in the administrative work of offices such as Admissions, University Counselling or the Dean of Students’ Office
* Coach athletic teams
* Chaperone off-campus field trips
* Introduce new student activities to campus (depending on a Teaching Fellow’s interests and experiences)
* Engagement in the CAS (creativity, action, service) programme

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have the following profile:

* Excellent academic achievement, a record of significant involvement in residential, athletic and community service during university, genuine interest in and commitment to the development mission of the Aga Khan Academies, a strong academic background in mathematics, languages (including ESL) and music.
* Knowledge of the admissions processes for hirghly selective North American and/or British universities and the ability to guide Academy students interested in applying to such universities would be especially helpful.
