( Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP), Uganda)

The Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non¬government, non- profit HIV research program that was established in 2002 as a result of a memorandum of understanding between Makerere University and The Henry M. Jackson foundation for Advancement of Military Medicine Inc.’of USA (HJF).The primary purpose of MUWRP is to develop, evaluate and provide interventions to mitigate communicable disease threats of public health importance to Uganda. Activities include; vaccine development and building of vaccine testing capability in Uganda, conducting of epidemiological and basic research and provision of HIV Treatment, care and support and surveillance of influenza and other emerging infections. The Project is looking for suitable candidates to fill the positions below:

POSITION TITLE:Nurses and/or Surgical Theatre
Assistants (2 positions)I
LOCATION: Kayunga and Mukono Districts. I

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Under the direction of MUWRP supervisors, provide nursing and/or surgical theatre assistant services as a member of a fixed or mobile safe male circumcision team
2. Assist in minor surgical procedures as per WHO/MOH guidelines under the guidance of technical advisors.
3. Conduct Health Education session and/or routine physical examinations.
4. Ensure patient safety and confidentiality.
5. Participate in complete, timely and accurate documentation of all surgical and follow-up procedures.
6. Maintain Surgical instruments and theatre equipment
7. Other duties as requested.

Requirement:QUALIFICATIONS:1.Registered / Enrolled Nurse or Midwife.2.At least 2 years of post-qualification professional experience.3.Experience in HIV/AIDS Prevention, care and Treatment including Antiretroviral Therapy.4.Excellent interpersonal/communication skills.5.Commitment to accomplishing designated goals and targets in service provision.6.Fluency in verbal and written English, able to fluently read and speak Luganda.7.Experience of living and working in a rural environment. 8.Must be registered with the Nurses and Midwives council.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:1. Highly organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated.2. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.3. Ability to work on own initiative and accomplish designated goals and targets.4. Ability to professionally communicate in writing, verbally or by other means deemed appropriate.ADDED ADVANTAGE EDUCATION/TRAINING:• Training as a Medical Theatre Assistant• Formal training in HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Treatment including Antiretroviral Therapy and Palliative Care.• Formal Training in Adolescent and adult Medical Male Circumcision under local Anaesthesia.• Formal training in counselling, especially youth counselling.PHYSICAL ABILITY: The ability to travel within Kayunga and Mukono Districts and surrounding areas. THEATRE CLEANERS ( FULL TIME )

About this Job:

The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to build capacity of health systems in Africa for the delivery of sustainable, high quality care and prevention of HIV/AIDS and related infectious diseases through training, research and advanced clinical services. IDI has five operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: prevention, care and treatment; training; research; laboratory services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere University-John Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach programmes. Since April 2011, IDI, with funding from Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been offering safe adult Male medical Circumcision services in Kampala as part of a comprehensive HIV prevention package for men. This initiative, branded “AMAKA -Adult Male Medical Circumcision in Kampala” is being implemented in two facilities in Kampala. IDI has received additional funding to further scale up MMC services beyond Kampala. This MMC scale up will initially involve the districts of: Kyankwanzi, Hoima, Kiboga, Masindi, Kibaale, Kiryandongo Buliisa and Kalangala among many others effective 1st October 2012.

13. THEATRE CLEANERS
Under the supervision of the site team leader, the cleaner will ensure that the theatre and its surroundings are clean and sterile at all times including all areas where MMC services are prodded

Key Responsibilities:
• Dump dust and clean the theatre block and it surroundings as per standards.
• Management of theatre waste using segregation system as per infection control standards.
• Manage the disposal of theatre waste including incineration of as per standards
• Participate in other duties as assigned by the site team leader
• Participates as a full member of the expanded AMAKA team
• Certificate in a relevant field
• Two years working experience in a surgical theatre setting
• Basic understanding of issues around infection control in health care settings
• Understanding of basic HIV/AIDS issues is an added advantage

Requirement:

Knowledge, Skills and abilities:
• Good communication skills
• Ability for learn work.
