School Development Advisor

VSO education volunteers are working in Cameroon to help promote teacher training, and encourage pupils, especially girls, to stay in school. The far north is the most disadvantaged province in Cameroon. The illiteracy rate for women is 72%, and less than 50% of girls between 6 and 14 years are enrolled at school. As a school development advisor, you'll be working with locally trained teachers to help improve the quality of school management as well as the quality of education.

In this role you'll facilitate and monitor the implementation of a yearly action plan as drafted by the school councils with VSO volunteers, and prepare the annual plan for the following year. You'll play a key role in building the capacity of School Council members, Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), Mother Teacher Associations (MTAs) and the school councils. The post will also involve mobilising and supporting education in the community by promoting and developing systems with the collaboration of different stakeholders. You'll also develop awareness raising activities to promote education for girls in collaboration with school communities, including the councils

The post requires a degree level qualification and at least 3 years experience in the field of education and in community mobilisation. Knowledge of school administration, management, gender, participatory approaches and experience in primary education would be an asset.
You'll need to be able to work in French and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Flexibility and a sense of humour are important qualities in all VSO volunteers, as these will help you to successfully integrate into your new community.

You'll be based in Zidim, a picturesque village situated in eastern Maroua, the regional capital of the far north of Cameroon. Most of the local population are farmers, and there is a weekly market of local produce. Transport is typically by moto taxi. You'll also need to be willing to ride pillion on motorbikes as the main means of travel.
