Monitoring & Evaluation Trainee - Uganda
We are looking for a motivated person at the beginning of her/his career with strong interest in the refugee cause and humanitarian work, and with outstanding skills in monitoring and evaluation.
Who are we?
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a private, independent, humanitarian organization working on all aspects of the refugee cause in more than 36 countries throughout the world. The aim of DRC is to protect refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) against persecution and to promote durable solutions to the problems of forced migration, on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. DRC works in accordance with the UN Conventions on Refugees and the Code of Conduct for the ICRC and NGOs in Disaster Relief.

About the job
The Monitoring and Evaluation Trainee will be responsible for monitoring and evaluation of the various programmes implemented by DRC-DDG Uganda in close liaison with implementing staff, program Managers and the M&E Officer. The M&E Trainee will be responsible for mixed method data collection, information management, data analysis, report writing and continuous development of evaluation and assessment methods.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Contribute to development and implementation of Monitoring and Evaluation for DRC Uganda’s projects country wide in close collaboration with the M&E officer
- Undertake field data collection including frequent travels to field locations across the country
- Assist in developing tools for data collection, both quantitative and qualitative, and provide constructive assistance to field managers with data collection
- Assist in data analysis, drawing accurate conclusions, and present them in usable form for the country program.
- Assist in drafting finalization of M&E reports, including impact monitoring reports.
- Take part in/conduct workshops and training within and outside the organization as may be required.
- Be flexible / willing to take up additional tasks as may be required.
About you
To be successful in this role you must have:
Required qualifications
- Master degree in relevant field (e.g. political or social sciences, development studies, geography)
- Proficiency in English – written & spoken
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
- Strong analytical, report writing and communication skills
- Demonstrated knowledge in M&E concepts, incl. practical use of log-frames and impact monitoring
- Demonstrated experience in quantitative data collection and statistical data analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting interviews and focus group discussions
- Interest in refugee matters and humanitarian work and respectful attitude towards individuals in a vulnerable situation
- Commitment to spend up to 50% of time on field work in West Nile, Karamoja and Western Uganda
- Willing to be part of a hard working team with ambitions of ensuring monitoring and evaluation of high methodological quality in order to inform project development and to ensure organizational learning.
- Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations with the other team members and other stakeholders.
- Ability to work under pressure and to work with minimal supervision.
Desirable qualifications
- Public information & communications skills, including use of InDesign or other lay-outing software is an added advantage
- Skills in GIS is an added advantage
We offer
DRC will offer the successful applicant a 9 month contract, renewable up to 12 months dependent on both funding and performance. You must be available to start work from 1st March 2015 or soonest hereafter, and be willing and able to work 50% in Kampala and 50% in the field.
Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for Expatriates; please refer to www.drc.dk under Vacancies. This position will be placed at level A17 (USD 1,000 /month) plus international travel to and from Uganda, accommodation & insurance.
