100Bn loan book with 99.3% recovery rate, operationally and financially self-sustaining.

In order to serve our customers better with wider range of services and

products, Board and Management has future plans of becoming a regulated

financial Institution in Uganda – Micro-Deposit Taking Institution (MDI).


Job Summary: The Chief Manager Legal will offer  support BRAC Uganda Microfinance by drafting

and reviewing legal documents including pleadings, contracts, credit facilities

and securities, provide legal advice, conduct research and represent BRAC

Uganda Microfinance in Courts of Law in line with divisional standards and

targets on legal risk management and best practice standards. The Chief Manager

Legal will also serve as CS and Secretary to the Board;


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 


·        
Conduct

legal research and provide legal advice and guidance on proactive compliance of

the Microfinance with new legislation and or best practices likely to affect

BRAC Microfinance business, policy and operating environment.


·        
Regularly

review fraud investigation reports and findings and make recommendations for

appropriate legal action to redress, hold watching briefs for BRAC Microfinance

in criminal proceedings in courts of law in respect of matters reported by the

Microfinance and accordingly report progress.


·        
Responsible

for preparing responses to notices of intention to sue and liaise with the

relevant Divisions/Branches for timely compilation of information required for

the Microfinance response thereto in compliance with the Legal requirements,

consumer protection standards and Divisional Service Level Agreements.


·        
The

CML will be tasked with submitting weekly/monthly reports on new and existing

legal suits by and against the Microfinance, progress of credit recovery cases

assigned for collection, trend and exposure analysis thereof, and recommend

strategies. Manage the Microfinance external advocates and branches on,

information required for progress of any court proceedings in which the

Microfinance has an interest and advice on measures to be taken for their efficient

and effective management.


·        
Draft

and review contracts entered into by the Microfinance for procurement of goods

and services in line with the Bank’s requirements, policy and best practice on

prudent risk management.


·        
Regularly

review and perfect documentation for Credit facilities to Microfinance

customers in line with Microfinance policy, relevant legislation and divisional

Service Level Agreements.


Qualifications, Skills and

Experience: 


·        
The

applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor of Laws degree. Possession of a Post

Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice


·        
At

least four years’ post-enrollment experience in either active legal practice

(litigation bias) in a reputable law firm, as in-house counsel in a financial

institution or large reputable institution


·        
Qualification

to practice as a lawyer in a national jurisdiction is required.


·        
At

least one year of experience appearing as an advocate/litigator before a court

or tribunal is required


·        
Prior

legal experience in international, administrative and/or employment law is

desirable. Previous experience at the international level, preferably in an

international public organization, is desirable


All suitably qualified and interested
