Global Health Corps pairs intelligent and

passionate fellows with organizations that require new thinking and innovative

solutions. We provide these young leaders with the tools to remain connected

after their fellowship year finishes, deepening their ability to enact change

through heightened skills and strong partnerships. We currently place fellows

in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, the United States, and Zambia.


Save the Mothers (STM) is an

international organization that is operating in Uganda but is registered in the

US, Canada and East Africa. Its vision is that “no mother or her child

should die of pregnancy complications”. It is a non-governmental

organization equipping professionals in developing countries–who work in a

wide array of disciplines–to improve the health of mothers and babies.

Multidisciplinary professionals are trained through the Master of Public Health

Leadership Program, which is hosted by Save the Mothers at the Uganda Christian

University. Through their specific vocations, graduates of our Master in Public

Health Leadership (MPHL) program become influencers for positive societal

change, working to overcome preventable maternal death. STM has enrolled over

350 East African professionals in its MPHL Program at UCU, developing change

agents that bring change in maternal health to their spheres of influence. In

addition, STM is utilizing its graduates to bring measurable and sustainable

change to health facilities through its Mother Baby Friendly Hospital

Initiative (now working in eight Ugandan hospitals).


Job Summary: The Program Coordinator will work with

the Program Director and team to implement the “Mother Baby Friendly Hospital

Initiative” which is a ten-step approach to improving maternal and newborn

health. The coordinator will support these efforts in 8 pilot hospitals as well

as the scaling up of operations to hospitals in different parts of Uganda. The

fellow will work with health facilities to use this multi-disciplinary approach

in improving the quality of care given to vulnerable mothers and newborns. A

critical factor to this effort will be buildings relationships between the hospitals

and the communities they serve as well as motivating and mentoring health

workers to give their best service possible.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 


·        
Work

closely with the Program Director and team on Mother Baby Friendly Hospitals

initiative


·        
Motivate

and mentor staff to ensure that the ten step approach to this initiative is

mastered and that a high quality of care is given to mothers and newborns


·        
Design

and implement a monitoring system to ensure mothers and their babies have a

safe and dignified delivery


·        
Document

best practices and compile monthly reports


·        
Provide

support to the team in scaling up operations to hospitals in different parts of

Uganda


·        
Use

a multi-disciplinary approach in stimulating long-term change so that quality

maternal and newborn care is the norm within the pilots


·        
Keenly

analyze program activities such as strategic planning with the team in order to

evaluate potential scale up of the program to other health facilities across

Uganda and eventually the East African Region


·        
Identify

other potential partners for scale up and dissemination of STM’s core

activities and results


Qualifications, Skills and

Experience: 


·        
The

ideal candidate for the Global Health Corps Program Coordinator job opportunity

should preferably hold a Master’s degree in global or public health or any

other relevant graduate qualification


·        
Previous

work experience in the area of maternal and child or reproductive health is

desired


·        
Strong

collaborator and ability to inspire/mobilize others. Includes potential funders

as well as their colleagues in the Save the Mothers team (East African

professionals who are committed to maternal/child health)


·        
Respectful

of the principles of identity and Code of Conduct at Uganda Christian

University where the program is housed


·        
Excellent

report writing skills


·        
Knowledgeable

on strategic plan development and implementation


·        
Keen

interest in maternal and child health


·        
Ability

to work with multi-disciplinary professionals


Job Terms and Conditions: Fellows will be provided with housing,

health insurance and a living stipend of $550/month. Additionally, fellows will

receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year.

Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC

programming are included, including $600 in professional development funds.

Housing will be provided at Uganda Christian University, where Save the

Mothers’ offices are located, in Mukono, a peri-urban center in central Uganda.


Note:

The living stipend and completion award may be paid out in USD or local

currency, as determined by the placement organization.
