Uganda: Fundraising and Programme Development Officer

Background and context:

The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa – SIHA Network – is a coalition of civil society organisations from Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland and Uganda. Founded in 1995, the organisation advocates for social change and gender equality in the Horn region and works specifically on protecting women’s human rights, promoting women’s access to justice, supporting economic empowerment and activating women’s political participation. SIHA’s secretariat/HQ is located in Kampala, Uganda and SIHA maintains field offices in Sudan and South Sudan.

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Regional Director, and in close collaboration with the Regional Programme Officer and other relevant staff members, the Programme Development and Fundraising Officer will be responsible for identifying programmatic priorities and funding opportunities, developing concept notes and proposals, supporting programme implementation, building partnerships, and liaising with donors. Where possible, the person may be required to assist with capacity building of partner agencies and project oversight.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

To identify relevant areas of programming and funding opportunities;To compile and maintain a database of local and international donors;To design a fundraising strategy;To develop concept notes and proposals in consultation with relevant staff members and partners;To liaise and communicate with donors as per direction;To assist in the development of communication materials;To organise fundraising and/or communication events as per request;To support programme implementation as per request;To strengthen relationships with SIHA members and partners through regular communication;To build the capacity of partner agencies as per request;Participate in the promotion of SIHA work and image locally and regionally;Carry out other tasks assigned by the Regional Director.

Profile:

The candidate must have demonstrated experience in proposal development and donor liaison and proven track record of successful fundraising. A commitment to women’s rights and gender equality as is essential.

Qualifications, experiences and requires competencies:

Strong academic background in the fields of social sciences, international development, gender studies and/or human rights;A good understanding of the political and human rights dynamics in the Horn of Africa;A minimum of five years of work experience in programme development & management and/or fundraising in the fields of gender and/or human rights;Extensive knowledge and experience working with civil society organisations and/or donor agencies;Strong knowledge of fundraising dynamics and trends, proposal format and application procedures of key donors, including Logical Framework Analysis;Demonstrated success in preparing grant applications that have been approved for funding;Solid knowledge of project cycle management;Familiarity with budgeting;Strong analysis and writing skills;Excellent command of English and excellent communication skills.Proven organizational skills, including the ability to manage priorities, work under pressure and meet tight deadlines;Strong sense of initiative and ability to work independently;Previous exposure to international and/or multicultural /multilingual environment – Able to function effectively within a multi-cultural team;Willingness to work extra hours when needed.

About the Fellowship Placement Organization:Set Her Free (SHF) is a non-profit organization working to restore the lives of young girls that were victims of sexual exploitation. We currently run 2 homes in the Kawempe and Nakawa Divisions of Kampala, Uganda. At these homes, we provide food, shelter, formal education, vocational skills training, counselling, and medical care to young women. SHF provides temporary accommodation and resettlement assistance for girls who do not have safe places to go at night, and provides services for the girls at the centre during the day. SHF provides an open and non-judgmental community that supports girls in reaching their full potential.

Fellowship Position Overview:The Fundraising and Communications Officer’s primary role will be to lead Set Her Free’s resource mobilization efforts by identifying potential donors and partners, crafting proposals and letters of interest, and helping to develop strategic organizational growth plans. The Fundraising and Communication Officer’s secondary role will be to create a coherent and attractive communications strategy and represent the organization in external and partner meetings.

Responsibilities:

About the Fellowship Placement Organization:Save the Mothers (STM) is an international organization operating in Uganda, but registered in the US, Canada and East Africa. Its vision is “No mother or her child should die of pregnancy complications.” STM is a non-governmental organization equipping professionals in developing countries–who work in a wide array of disciplines–to improve the health of mothers and babies. Multidisciplinary professionals are trained through the Master of Public Health Leadership Program, hosted by Save the Mothers at the Uganda Christian University. Through their specific vocations, graduates of our Master in Public Health Leadership (MPHL) program become influencers for positive societal change, working to overcome preventable maternal death. STM has enrolled over 350 East African professionals in its MPHL Program at UCU, developing change agents that bring change in maternal health to their spheres of influence. In addition, STM is utilizing its graduates to bring measurable and sustainable change to health facilities through its Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (now working in 8 Ugandan hospitals).

Fellowship Position Overview:The GHC fellow will be committed to improving maternal child health in a global community where mothers and babies continue to die from preventable diseases. The GHC fellow will have a vital role in helping to ensure that resources are available to make that a reality. S/he will contribute to fundraising and grant writing with a focus on sources that are primarily from the East African context (and hence more sustainable and regional). This funding will support the leadership training of multidisciplinary East African professionals (through a Master of Public Health Leadership program) and clinical outreach activities (such as the Mother Baby Hospital Friendly Initiative) of Save the Mothers.

Purpose of the Post
Like any other NGO we rely on fundraising from trusts, corporate and individual
donors to support our work. As a pilot initiative, initially for one year, we would like to
recruit an innovative and highly enthusiastic fundraiser to help undertake research to
inform approaches and facilitate the development of application forms to selected
individuals, corporate and trusts as a way of fundraising for our work.
Key responsibilities
1. To establish a portfolio of donors, corporate and trust fundraising activities.
2. To research and develop a pipeline of donors, corporate and trust support.
3. To work with our partners in UK and BDF members of staff like the
Communications and Advocacy Coordinator, OVC Coordinator, Livelihood
Coordinator, HBC Coordinator and HCT Coordinator to ensure that donor
opportunities are effectively packaged, managed and solicited.
4. To work with key figures to secure gifts to support our existing and as well as
developing new activities.
5. To Map networks and connectivity to support beneficial relationships for the work
of the organization.
6. To develop new, key revenue streams in a structured and managed fashion.
7. To be a key contributor to the fundraising programme – providing enhanced donor
care, high net worth individuals, corporate donors and trusts
8. To develop and implement successful solicitation plans for identified prospects
9. To participate in the development of PR & Fundraising strategic plans
10.To manage and maintain an accurate and up-to-date donor database and filing
system that underpins the administration of the program.
11.To take forward specialist projects as shall be assigned from time to time.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
1. A university degree, relevant to this role, from a recognized institution.
2. Self motivated and target driven -success in the role will be measured by actual
results, using performance data.
3. Ability to demonstrate people skills and achieve targets.

5. Ability to write evocative and inspiring fundraising applications.

10.Developed research skills on fundraising.

aims of BDF and work of our partners.
12.Well organized and able to manage own time and workload to meet tight
deadlines.
13.Experience of managing information using electronic (e.g. databases) and paper
systems, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
14.A good knowledge of and understanding of a wide range of computer packages.
