About the Global Health Corps Fellowship: Global Health Corps is a one-year paid fellowship that pairs young professionals with organizations (fellowship placement organizations) that require new thinking and innovative solutions. About the Fellowship Placement Organization:

Jhpiego is an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with The Johns Hopkins University. For 40 years and in over 155 countries, Jhpiego has worked to prevent the needless deaths of women and their families. Jhpiego works with health experts, governments and community leaders to provide high-quality health care for their people. Jhpiego develops strategies to help countries care for themselves by training competent health care workers, strengthening health systems and improving delivery of care.

Jhpiego designs innovative, effective and low-cost health care solutions to ensure a level of care for women and their families. These practical, evidence-based interventions are breaking down barriers to high-quality health care for the world's most vulnerable populations. Jhpiego has worked off and on in Uganda for nearly 30 years. In 2011, Jhpiego made a strategic decision based on country needs and interests from key stakeholders to establish a country office, with the goal of strengthening Jhpiego's support to Uganda's Ministry of Health. The fellows will actively participate in developing this exciting endeavor.

Fellowship Position Overview: The Knowledge Management, Communication and External Relations fellows will work closely with the Country Director and individual program managers to ensure that the Jhpiego-Uganda program is capturing and communicating program information effectively, using as many means as possible, to a wide range of external audiences in Uganda. The fellows will work with the Country Director to ensure regular and effective interpersonal engagements with key partners and stakeholders; and active external relations efforts that target many different groups, including partners at the community/district levels, decision makers in Kampala, and interested international audiences. Finally, these fellows will work with the Country Director to devise systems by which the external policy and programmatic environment is being monitored, and findings from this "environmental scanning" process are being incorporated into program planning and implementation. As core members of a small team, these fellows will be fully engaged in many aspects of program activity, and will have the opportunity to contribute their ideas on how to improve programs to better respond to the needs and interests of the external environment.

Responsibilities: *
Strategy Development:*

Read and become familiar with Jhpiego Communications ManualWork with the Country Director and individual program managers to develop an overall program external relations strategy:Help define means for regularly compiling and presenting program information to key in-country stakeholders using a variety of written, verbal and electronic approaches; and for tracking feedback received, so that it can be incorporated into program evolutionHelp to define and implement a plan for ensuring that Jhpiego-Uganda is well represented at the many meetings taking place in the public health realm, and that Jhpiego is contributing effectively to the dialogue that takes place through these meetingsHelp define a system for ensuring that Jhpiego is using these engagements as an opportunity to continually refine its understanding of the external environment in which it is operating, and to continually evolve its activities to respond to that environmentWork with the Country Director to develop effective knowledge management systems at the country level

Increasing Program Sharing and Visibility in Uganda:

Lead implementation of all of the strategies aboveWork with individual program managers to generate, document and share lessons learned from program activitiesDevelop a packet of compelling program information (and a system for ensuring that it is regularly updated), with an emphasis on presenting results of interventions and innovations, and lessons learned in the implementation processEnsure that all information/communication coming out of the program is presented in such a way that it gives a clear and compelling presentation, and reflects the innovation and effectiveness of the Jhpiego-Uganda programLead efforts to regularly share program information through multiple outlets (presentations, one-on-one meetings, comments at large meetings, written briefings, etc.)Work with the Country Director and program managers to ensure that Jhpiego-Uganda is regularly engaging with and providing the necessary program information to key partners and stakeholders through one-on-one interactions, and also through regular presence at meetings and other group forums

Job Purpose:

The Senior Officer, Sponsorship Operations and Communications is responsible for managing sponsorship information effectively and efficiently in line with both local and international Save the Children sponsorship & quality standards. Academic back ground and Experience;

• Minimum of a Degree in Computer science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Business Computing or related field.

About the Fellowship Placement Organization:Set Her Free (SHF) is a non-profit organization working to restore the lives of young girls that were victims of sexual exploitation. We currently run 2 homes in the Kawempe and Nakawa Divisions of Kampala, Uganda. At these homes, we provide food, shelter, formal education, vocational skills training, counselling, and medical care to young women. SHF provides temporary accommodation and resettlement assistance for girls who do not have safe places to go at night, and provides services for the girls at the centre during the day. SHF provides an open and non-judgmental community that supports girls in reaching their full potential.

Fellowship Position Overview:The Fundraising and Communications Officer’s primary role will be to lead Set Her Free’s resource mobilization efforts by identifying potential donors and partners, crafting proposals and letters of interest, and helping to develop strategic organizational growth plans. The Fundraising and Communication Officer’s secondary role will be to create a coherent and attractive communications strategy and represent the organization in external and partner meetings.

Uganda: Communications Officer-SIHA Regional Office

Background and Context:

The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa – SIHA Network – is a coalition of women rights civil society from Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland and Uganda. Founded in 1995, SIHA advocates for social change and gender equality in the Horn region and works specifically on protecting women’s human rights, promoting women’s access to justice, supporting economic empowerment and activating women’s political participation. SIHA’s secretariat/HQ is located in Kampala, Uganda and SIHA maintains field offices in Sudan and South Sudan.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

Implement SIHA communication activities in collaboration with the SIHA team and member organizations across the Horn of Africa region.Monitor and respond to news items and trends in key SIHA priority countries, using current events and contextual knowledge to shape policy statements, public statements, and other communication activities.Suggest and lead advocacy actions on behalf of SIHA members and secretariat office.Contribute to the drafting of a number of SIHA annual publications.Edit, review and supervise the quality assurance of all SIHA published work.Manage and update SIHA website and Twitter account.Prepare and disseminate SIHA online monthly newsletter.Contribute to advocacy campaign planning and activities.Assist in program and project work implementation as required.Maintain an up to date e-mail list and contact details of all member organizations, associates, donors, institutional partners, and other SIHA associates.Regularly communicate to SIHA members and support their advocacy efforts through field visits, meetings, and e-mail/phone communications as required.Work closely with SIHA teams across the Horn region and establish communication with SIHA offices and area coordinators.

The candidate for this position should be able to observe current events and trends in the Horn of Africa regarding the human rights and well being of women and girls, and translate this knowledge to advocacy initiatives and effective communication with SIHA members and affiliates.

She or he should possess strong networking skills, team work abilities, cross cultural sensitivity and ability to interact effectively with women and men across the Horn of Africa.

The candidate should finally be highly motivated, dynamic and be capable of taking initiative (‘self-starting’) in developing effective communication strategies.

Qualifications, Experience, and Required Competencies:

Applicants of this position should possess a minimum of 3 years of work experience in human rights advocacy and communication. A degree or post graduate degree in social sciences and/or humanities is essential. Experience working in advocacy in Horn of Africa countries in particular is an advantage.

The NairoBits program has had positive impact on the target group and this has generated confidence among the stakeholders in the ICT sector. The program has particularly attracted attention from many partners who wish to scale up the program to reach more vulnerable youths and/or replicate the program to other areas in the region.• Develop and implement a strategic marketing plan that will advance NairoBits’s brand, broaden awareness of its programs and grow funding support.
• Manage the development and distribution of all print and electronic collateral, including newsletters, the annual report and event invitations.
• Develop and guide NairoBits’s online strategy, including its website and social media. Work closely with staff and graphic designer to write and design content.
• Collaborate with trainers and NairoBit’s partners to develop compelling stories that convey how donors’ contributions are being used on the ground.
• Ensure consistent and effective communication of NairoBits’s brand and positioning across all channels.

SOS Children’s Village Somalia and Somaliland, a branch of SOS Children’s Villages International is a Non-Governmental organization (NGO) which is non-sectarian, non- partisan and non – profit making organization. Its core mission is to provide care and support for children who are at risk of or have lost parental care. Presently we work in five project locations of Mogadishu and Baidoa (South and Central Somalia), Berbera, Hargeisa, and Sheikh (Somaliland) in the areas of child care, education, health and emergency programming. Under its flagship health program, SOS runs a Mother and Child Referral Hospital in Mogadishu that see over 200,000 patients annually across primary health care and comprehensive in-patient and also runs a nursing school that acts a research and a practicum site for local medical teaching universities.SOS Somalia/Somaliland intends to raise its visibility both locally and internationally, as it looks build strong partnerships with other INGOs, government, local communities and donors. These stories must be compelling, genuine and beneficiary centered and should tell show how the programmes have promoted positive change in the care, health, education and emergency sectors. 10-15 success stories/case studies 3 àTake professional photos of the state of the major program activities, showcasing SOS interventions and how they impact the lives of the communities. The photos which can be used for fundraising and showcasing.Edit and submit the photos in addition to using some of them in the design of the brochures. 400 high-quality and high-resolution, edited, pictures from SOS Somalia and Somaliland projects delivered on CD. 4 à Design and layout of the organizational profile, fact sheets and case study write-upsWork with a printing firm to ensure mass production of brochures.We work with children and the photos should respect the rights of children in accordance with our child protection policy. Subjects within the images should appear natural, relaxed and images should not be posed. The photos should tell a story about the function of our work and not be superficial with an over use of added effects. Images should not be contrived and have an inspirational, positive feel to them. The dignity of the subjects should be upheld.Copyright and intellectual property rights will be retained with SOS Somalia/Somaliland and the consultant will be expected to adhere to this. The NairoBits program has had positive impact on the target group and this has generated confidence among the stakeholders in the ICT sector.
