USAID Project Careers - Private Sector Partnerships Specialist at TechnoServe

With more than four decades of proven results, we believe in the power of private enterprise to transform lives.USAID Uganda is funding a new five-year Youth Leadership for Agriculture program to increase economic opportunities for hundreds of thousands of Ugandan female and male youth aged 10 to 35, in agriculture- related fields, in order to increase their incomes and build entrepreneurial, leadership, and workforce readiness skills. Pending confirmation of funding, TechnoServe will lead this program in select districts in Uganda, including Northern Uganda, through market systems and facilitative approaches. This program will focus on achieving two specific objectives by partnering with both public and private entities: (1) increased incomes of youth working in agricultural value chains (specifically maize, beans and coffee); and (2) improved skills development (entrepreneurship, employability, leadership, and life skills) obtained through formal and non-formal education and training organizations.Job Summary: The USAID Project Private Sector Partnerships Specialist is responsible for technical leadership and oversight for activities under "Objective One". Objective One will improve relationships and networks among value chain actors (focusing on the maize, bean and coffee value chains) and youth (ages 15-35) and use strategic investments and incentives to encourage private sector actors to provide technical assistance, training, mentoring, as well as increased market (both input and output) opportunities for large numbers of youth. This will involve developing relationships between private sector actors, such as input suppliers or exporters of maize, coffee and/or beans and youth and negotiating to improve their access to markets and enable youth to join and extract benefits from the value chain. With an awareness and keen understanding of appropriate existing agricultural technologies for youth, s/he will lead the investigation of the needs and skill requirements of employers and help link to youth to opportunities.Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  The ideal candidate for the USAID Project career placement should hold a Master's degree in economics, agricultural economics, business, international development, public policy, law, or other relevant field. A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with 10 years of experience may be substituted for a Master's degree.At least six years of international experience in business or agriculture development.Possess excellent track record of achieving results in private sector-led development activities, preferably in agriculture. A substantial portion of our work is in agriculture, enhancing farm productivity and commodity quality and addressing gaps in processing and other agribusiness capacities. Our programs increase smallholder access to new technologies, aggregation and storage mechanisms, markets, critical information and finance. TechnoServe also undertakes structured programs to identify and support high potential entrepreneurs in various sectors through leadership mentoring networks, formalization support, access to capital and development of sustainable business services such as accounting, finance, marketing and human resource management.The UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) is financing a new, four- year agriculture/ agribusiness program for Northern Uganda that seeks to improve the incomes of hundreds of thousands of Northern Ugandan farmers using a Making Markets Work for the Poor (M4P) approach. M4P aims to accelerate pro-poor growth by making markets function better and with greater fairness for poor men and women. It addresses the behavior of the private sector through a combination of changes to government policies and support to development of new business models that are more inclusive of the poor and seeks to reinforce and strengthen market systems. Climate smart agriculture and agribusiness and women will be prioritized.Job Summary: The Agribusiness Lead will steer and manage the Programs relationship with multiple agribusinesses, mostly agri-processors, which are primarily but not only located in the North of the country. S/he will build and grow partnerships with these entities, help them analyze and address the opportunities and challenges they face in the market, strengthen market strategy and execute those strategies, with the aim of increasing growth and improving performance, while at the same time benefitting smallholder producers in the North. S/he will be working closely with the agribusinesses on a day-to-day basis and facilitating any additional support to be provided by third parties. The incumbent will be performing regular work planning and reporting will be required. S/he will also lead and supervise a team of colleagues. The jobholder will also coordinate project activities with our partners, manage technical inputs and identify strategies to effective execution of the project objectives. TechnoServe is looking for a Senior Business Manager for its fruit program which is being implemented in Eastern Uganda. The fruits of focus are mango and passion fruit. The program aims to improve the incomes of 17,000 small-scale mango and passion fruit farmers by organizing them to effectively bulk and market fruits for processing into pulp and for sale to fresh fruit markets. The program will improve the capacity of the farmers to produce the right quality of fruit as demanded by diverse market segments and increase their ability to benefit from business development services being promoted by the project.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Country Director, the Senior Business Manager's roles and responsibilities will be:
? Lead and manage TechnoServe's components of the fruit program initiative in Uganda
? Manage project staff, including Senior Business Advisors and Business Advisors
? Project and financial management, reporting, training and supervision of the project staff
? Alignment of volume objectives with fruit processing SMEs and fresh produce wholesalers
? Fresh produce market and producer organization development
? Build partnerships with private sector buyers, SME fruit processors, and government and development institutions
? Coordinate project activities, manage technical inputs and identify strategies to effective execution of project objectives.

Qualification and Experience:
This position seeks an agribusiness and/or private sector development professional. This is a senior position in the organization and applicants should have 7+ years of progressive senior experience in private sector development, program management, economic development, management consultancy, agro-processing operations and marketing in a reputable development/private sector environment.

? Bachelor's Degree (Masters preferred) in business, commerce, food technology, agriculture, science or any related field
? Demonstrable experience in senior program management and team leadership
? Experience in developing effective execution strategies
? Excellent oral and written presentation skills in English
? Demonstrable experience developing complex client business plans

The successful candidate for this position will be one who is passionate about helping people; believes in hard work, has strong work ethics, good communication skills and capable of effectively leading a diverse team for collective success. The position is based in Mbale with frequent travels.
