Child Mentor – Jinja – Children of Grace

Children of Grace is an international not-for-profit Christian organization based in Jinja, Uganda with headquarters in the United States of America. Our mission is to demonstrate Christ’s love to children affected by poverty through education, healthcare, character development, and empowerment.


Job Summary: The Child Mentor will be a Christian role-model for the mentee, providing relevant mentoring and supporting the mentee academically, socially, physically, and spiritually through education, empowerment, healthcare, and advocacy. The role of the Mentor includes but is not limited to:
Advocating for child’s rights
Listening to the child’s ideas, dreams, needs, & concerns
Protecting confidence by establishing & maintaining the mutual respect and trust needed for the risk-taking necessary for learning, maturing, & growth
Demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ so children will know they are a special child of God
Celebrating children by recognizing accomplishments and affirming growth, self-confidence, and self-esteem
Christian Role Model


Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Termly school headcount of all students and providing Financial Officer with school fee information for each student.
Consult with the mentee’s teachers three times per term to follow-up on students’ academic and social progress at school
Build a working relationship with the HM’s or Director of Studies of all assigned schools
Schedule and carry out school office hours at assigned schools each week for activities including career guidance, character development, coaching, and relevant mentoring.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Manage and enter data into Access Database for assigned mentees
Assess and recruit new children for potential child sponsorship following the Sponsorship Policy and guidelines as assigned.
Evaluate school reports of mentees each term by comparing each term’s report and make written recommendations to help mentees improve upon their academic skills
Prepare and submit an annual progress report and picture of each mentee for the child’s sponsor
Provide one written article and picture for the website each term
Take an annual picture of the student and record in database.
Once per term, collect and edit letters from mentees to sponsors
Help plan and develop holiday programs as assigned
Help plan and fully participate in Camp All-stars
Help plan and coordinate activities for visiting mission teams as assigned


Child Social Roles:
Develop positive relationships with mentees through understanding the child, conducting one on one counseling and mentoring sessions, listening to and advising students on the challenges they face, build trust and confidence with the children etc.
Annually reassess each mentee within their environment: home, school, village and compare these assessments with previous assessments and document recommendations
Make recommendations for extra child support i.e. when there is need for extra financial support for personal school requirements, school uniforms, shoes, and other items as needed.
Home Support:
Work with local leaders and other organizations within the community to better serve the communities and children
Develop a positive and child supporting relationship with the guardian/ parent to ensure balanced support for the child both at school and home.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Child Development or related fields.
At least two internships serving vulnerable children or demonstrated interest in issues affecting children.
Previous experience developing and presenting child related programs to children and communities.
Previous experience working in a cross-cultural community.
Strong knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office and Database Management software.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Demonstrated ability to work individually in a self-directed manner and as part of a team, coordinating efforts with program staff and other development staff.
Demonstrated planning, program development and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of local community services and resources available for children.
Detail-oriented.
High degree of honesty and integrity.
Ready to relocate to Jinja, Uganda.
