Engineers

Without Borders Canada was founded in 2000 by CEOs, George Roter and Parker

Mitchell on a napkin in a coffee shop. With a dream of an organization that

would enable engineers to contribute something other than another bridge or

another electrical grid, they started off with biweekly meetings in George’s

parents’ living room. By the end of 2000, over 1000 members had joined and a

handful of chapters were starting. And in January 2001, EWB’s first volunteer

left for a four month internship in India. Engineers Without Borders creates

change by supporting social innovations in Canada and Africa that can break the

systems that sustain poverty. We promote policies to foster more equitable

development. We invest in leaders who enable others to reach their full

potential.


EWB

wants want to see a world where everyone can have their basic needs met, and


grow

to their full potential. We do this in three ways:

  • Investing in people’s leadership development

    through our model of Systems Change Leadership;

  • Making flexible, long-term investments &

    grants of up to $100,000 in early-stage, scalable ventures (from concept

    to scale) with high potential to drive systemic change for the benefit of the

    underserved;

  • Promoting policies & institutional

    changes that enable more equitable development.


EWB’s

Fellowship Programs are a core piece of the EWB community. Our Fellowships equip

individuals with the skills, knowledge and experiences needed to increase the impact

of the Ventures EWB incubates. EWB’s Fellowships also contribute to the long term

goal of shaping the future leaders of the international development sector. We

currently operate 4 inter-linked Fellowship Programs across Kenya, Ghana,

Malawi, Zambia and Uganda:

  • The EWB Long-Term Fellowship for young

    Canadian professionals to work for 1+ years with EWB Ventures in Africa

    (approx. 30 Fellows per year)

  • The Junior Fellowship for Canadian university

    students to work for 3.5 months with EWB Ventures, and return to

    contribute to their EWB university chapter (approx. 20 Fellows per year)

  • The Corporate Fellowship for Canadian

    professionals to work for 5 months with EWB Ventures, and return to

    contribute to their EWB City Network or corporate company (partnered with EWB)

    (approx. 3 Fellows per year)

  • The Kumvana Fellowship for African leaders to

    participate in leadership development and short work placements in Canada,

    and return to lead local initiatives and grow EWB’s African community.

    (approx. 15 Fellows per year)


Job Summary: The Fellow Support Coordinator will support about 70

individuals who participate in EWB’s Fellowship programs every year. The

incumbent will work closely with  EWB’s

West Africa Fellow Support Coordinator to take EWB’s support to its Fellows to

the next level. The job holder will enable this formidable community of Fellows

to make significant impact through their work placements, and anchor them in a life-long

trajectory of leadership, pursuing systems-level social change. Part of this

opportunity is about developing a vision that answers some important questions:

  • How can we develop internal systems to

    seamlessly support Fellows’ logistics?

  • How can we develop networks of ongoing

    coaching and mentorship that will enhance the impact and personal development

    of EWB Fellows?

  • How can we increase the sense of belonging of

    EWB Fellows to our community in Africa as well as our global community?

  • How can we ensure the health, safety and

    wellness of EWB Fellows?


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

 
The core

responsibility will be to ensure that EWB’s Fellowship programming meets a standard of excellence , thus enabling

excellence in both Fellows’ professional
performance and personal development in their Fellowship.

  • Start with directly investing in people –

    playing a crucial role in EWB Fellows’ development as leaders to enhance

    their work and learning. This includes:

  • In charge of coordinating EWB trainings and

    retreats in the region, including content planning and logistical

    arrangements

  • Responsible for developing content, tools and

    resources to support Fellows’ personal and professional development on an

    ongoing basis

  • Providing technical support in measuring the

    effectiveness of our Fellowship programs

  • Coordinate the necessary administrative and

    logistical arrangements for Fellows to live and work in the region

  • Coordinate with legal counsel regarding EWB

    organizational registration in the region (Uganda and Kenya)

  • Organize for Canadian Fellows’ work permits

    in the region

  • Organize for Kumvana Fellows’ visas to Canada

  • Offer further logistical support to Fellows

    (accommodation, etc.)

  • Provide support to the health, safety and

    wellness of EWB Fellows, including:

    • Continuously implementing and

      improving policies and procedures relating to Fellows’ Health Safety

      & Wellness (HSW)

    • Helping to set a culture of

      proactivity with regards to Fellow health

    • Managing crisis incidents involving

      EWB personnel in Africa with support from the EWB office in Toronto

    • Foster a sense of community between

      EWB Fellows, EWB Ventures and EWB’s global community, including ensuring

      a high quality communication between

    • Fellows as well as between Fellows

      and the rest of the organization.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The Fellow Support Coordinator should

    preferably have at least two to three years’ experience

  • Broad knowledge and interest in and

    understanding of social entrepreneurship and leadership

  • The Fellow Support Coordinator should be a gifted

    administrator, coach, facilitator, and community builder capable of investing

    in our great community of fellows in Africa.

  • Good logistics and administration knowledge

    and skills

  • Facilitation and communication experience

    with intercultural groups

  • Prior experience in EWB’s countries of focus

  • Previous experience in risk assessment and

    emergencies management (robbery, sexual assaults, gender issues,

    kidnapping, etc.) an asset

  • The incumbent should have a core motivation

    of enabling others to stretch beyond what they believe is possible in order

    to enhance the impact they can have on the world.

  • Exhibit passion with people.

  • The jobholder will should love supporting and

    enabling leaders to be successful.

  • Values delivering well-organized, high

    quality support.

  • Prior experience in coaching leaders, and

    facilitating learning experiences.

  • Self-motivated and ambitious about the type

    of change you seek to create in the world.

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Good leadership skills

  • Desire to achieve social change.

  • Keen desire, and the right skills to

    facilitate transformational experiences for EWB Fellows while also

    minimizing and managing the risks involved in our Fellowship programs.

  • Possess a natural instinct for supporting people

    through tough situations to know the right things to say, and the right

    actions to take.

  • Action-oriented personality capable of  getting their hands dirty and starting

    immediate execution

  • First Aid Training and/or Mental Health First

    Aid Training an asset

  • Prior experience working in a non-profit or

    social enterprise in Canada and/or Africa an Asset

  • Bilingual in French and English an asset

  • Willingness to travel within and between

    EWB’s countries of operation

Compensation: Salary will be comparable to similar entry-level

roles within the not-for-profit sector in this country. Each employee has a

professional development fund as well as many opportunities for professional

growth. All employees are provided with health benefit package and 3 weeks of

vacation each year.
