Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH)

promotes biodiversity conservation by enabling people, wildlife, and livestock

to co-exist through improving their health and livelihoods in and around

protected areas in Africa. Our current priorities are to: (1) strengthen an

integrated conservation, health, and community development model of Village

Health and Conservation Teams – supported by group income-generating projects

and Village Savings and Loan Associations at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

– and scale the model to Mount Elgon and Virunga National Parks; (2) expand

zoonotic disease research at the human/wildlife/livestock interface and; (3)

advocate for integrated population, health, environment, and development

approaches by engaging policy and decision makers, civil society, and the

private sector, including Uganda Population, Health and Environment (PHE)

Working Group and Uganda Poverty and Conservation Learning Group (U-PCLG).


Job Summary: The Impact and Learning Coordinator will

support CTPH’s efforts to monitor and evaluate community health and

conservation programs at Bwindi Impenetrable, Mount Elgon, and Virunga National

Parks. The job role involves direct supervision of the CTPH Community Health

Field Officer, who supervises Village Health and Conservation Teams (VHCTs) in

the Kanungu and Kisoro districts and trains VHCT leaders at other locations.

The incumbent ill also supervise partners in the Democratic Republic of Congo

(DRC) and Kenya. VHCTs collect monthly data on PHE, which is entered into a

database by the site supervisors. The Impact and Learning Coordinator will regularly

review the accuracy and consistency of the data submitted, conduct database

management, and improve on the data collection design to more efficiently

capture information needed by CTPH, MOH, wildlife authorities, donors, and

other key stakeholders. He / she will also take part in the designing and

conducting periodic surveys to monitor the impact of the VHCTs. The individual

will also be engaged in coordinating the training of VHCTs and partners in PHE,

One Health research, and other relevant fields to accomplish these goals.

Additionally, the Impact and Learning Coordinator will provide support to

CTPH’s research program through mentoring students conducting field research

and gaining field practical experience.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 


·        
Mentor

and supervise Community Health Field Officers and partners (who coordinate the

VHCTs, restock family planning commodities regularly from local health centers,

and conduct village health talks)


·        
Actively

monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of VHCT behavior change communication

among national park communities through monthly data collection and visitation

to households


·        
Carry

out periodic surveys to further evaluate the outcome and impact of VHCT public

health and conservation behavior change communication


·        
Manage

the VHCT database


·        
Train

CTPH Community Health Field Officers and partners in PHE implementation


·        
Support

and mentor students in CTPH Field School program who are gaining field

practical experience and conducting PHE and One Health research


·        
Give

talks about CTPH to students and local stakeholders at Bwindi Impenetrable

National Park


·        
Work

closely with local health partners and other stakeholders to coordinate the

implementation of PHE and One Health research


·        
Represent

CTPH in national and international forum with health and advocacy partners


·        
Adhere

to CTPH policies and code of conduct


Qualifications, Skills and

Experience: 


·        
The

ideal candidate for the Global Health Corps Career placement should preferably

hold a Master’s degree in public health or related field


·        
The

applicant must have experience working in a public health role within a

national and international organization


·        
Excellent

track record of supervising staff and/or students


·        
Proven

experience with monitoring and evaluating programs is mandatory


·        
Self-motivated

with a strong ability to identify and develop relevant areas of work


·        
Demonstrated

ability to work as an effective team member and team leader


·        
Strong

communication, oral and written English skills


·        
Computer

literacy skills in basic Microsoft packages particularly Word, Excel and

PowerPoint


·        
Working

knowledge of integrated approaches to sustainable development including PHE or

One Health


·        
Broad

knowledge and understanding of key policies and stakeholders in the fields of

public health, including One Health and PHE


·        
Demonstrated

experience engaging local communities and local government is an added

advantage


·        
Prior

experience in grant writing and fundraising is desired


·        
Proven

experience in conducting research is also an added advantage


·        
Good

listening skills and consensus-building approaches


·        
Fluency

in the local languages, particularly Runyakitara and Swahili is desired


·        
Fluency

in French is an added advantage


Job Terms and Conditions: Fellows will be provided with housing,

health insurance and a living stipend of $550/month. Additionally, fellows will

receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year.

Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC

programming are included, including $600 in professional development funds.

Housing arrangements vary based on the placement organization and location

within the country. The fellow will be based at CTPH Headquarters in Entebbe,

an urban center, with travel to CTPH field sites at Bwindi Impenetrable and

Mount Elgon National Parks and other sites such as Queen Elizabeth National

Park and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve in Karamoja. S/he will stay in a room at CTPH

office with self-catering facilities.


Note:

The living stipend and completion award may be paid out in USD or local

currency, as determined by the placement organization.
