The Infectious

Diseases Institute (IDI) is an international non-profit organization which is a

partnership of infectious diseases and public health specialists. The overall

objective of the IDI is to strengthen health systems with strong emphasis on Infectious

Diseases, through Research and Capacity Development. IDI has five operational

areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and

Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory services (provided through a

partnership with the Makerere University – John Hopkins University Core Lab)

and Outreach.


The Infectious

Diseases Institute (IDI) has received funding from Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention (CDC) to implement a 5 year project “Global Health Security Partner Engagement:

Expanding Efforts and Strategies to Protect and Improve Public Health Globally.”

CDC under Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) seeks to accelerate progress

toward a world safe and secure from infectious disease threats and to promote

global health security as an international security priority in three key

areas:


·        
Preventing and reducing the likelihood of outbreaks

—natural, accidental, or intentional.


·        
Detecting threats early saves lives.


·        
Rapid, effective response requires multi-sectoral,

international coordination and communication.


Job Summary: The Driver assists

in providing safe and reliable transportation for project staff, visitors and

materials, keeps the project vehicle/s in good mechanical and functional

condition, ensures compliance with all vehicle-related legal and institutional

/management requirements.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 


·        
Providing safe, comfortable and reliable

transportation for Institute staff and partners/visitors including but not

confined to, travel within and outside Kampala, and all other locations as may

be required by authorized staff and in accordance with IDI’s regulations


·        
Transport Institute materials and supplies to

various destinations as required by authorized staff on Institute business and

keep the Institute vehicle in good mechanical and functional condition

including but not confined to regular fueling, servicing and cleaning of the

interior and exterior.


·        
Perform regular preventive maintenance and minor

repairs where possible and notify the Project administrator of any major car

repairs necessary and to assist in arranging and overseeing/supervising such

repairs.


·        
Ensure that all required documentation for

administrative use such as mileage, fuel usage and trip authorization tracking information

is kept up to date at all times in the prescribed manner; and ensure that all

legal, institutional and municipal requirements and dues are met in good time

and/or regularly renewed e.g. Third party and Comprehensive Insurance, Parking

Fees, Registration and Licenses etc.

Ensure that all reasonable measures are taken to

protect the Institute vehicle from theft or damage e.g. by ensuring that it has

adequate security and accident features such as alarms and “bull horns”


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 


·        
The Driver should hold a Uganda Advanced Certificate

of Education with a credit in English


·        
A minimum of three years’ experience of proven

accident free bus/heavy vehicle driving in Uganda, preferably in a reputable

institution


·        
Hold a Valid Uganda Permit with classes “DM” &

or “DL”


·        
Working knowledge of basic vehicle mechanics.


·        
Familiarity with the lay out and location of key

facilities in Kampala and other major Ugandan towns           


·        
Working knowledge of current traffic rules and

regulations


·        
Prior experience with light office duties such as

filing and photocopying is an added advantage


·        
Basic knowledge of vehicle operation and the

associated mechanics


·        
Physical ability and willingness to drive for long

hours and occasionally on weekends and/or holidays.           


·        
Ability to communicate competently and understand

instructions in English and in common local language/s.


·        
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks


·        
Ability to understand and adhere to company vehicle

policies and competently complete vehicle-related documentation.
