In the early

1950s, a group of women and men started to campaign vociferously and visibly

for women’s rights to control their own fertility. Family planning as a human

right challenged many social conventions. Campaigners faced great hostility to

gain acceptance for things that we take for granted today. Some were

imprisoned. But they emerged determined to work with different cultures,

traditions, laws and religious attitudes to improve the lives of women around

the world. And so, at the 3rd International Conference on Planned Parenthood in

1952, 8 national family planning associations founded the International Planned

Parenthood Federation (IPPF). IPPF strives for a world in which all women, men

and young people have access to the sexual and reproductive health information

and services they need; a world in which sexuality is recognized both as a

natural and precious aspect of life and as a fundamental right; a world in

which choices are fully respected and where stigma and discrimination have no

place.

Job

Summary: The Advocacy Advisor Right Here Right Now (RHRN) Project will mainly

oversee and implement the ‘Right Here Right Now’ strategic partnership with the

aim of strengthening the cooperation and advocacy of CSOs at national, regional

and international level for a progressive and inclusive SRHR agenda.

Key

Duties and Responsibilities: 

·        
The job holder will manage the ‘Right Here Right

Now’ project along all project cycle management phases, including development

and implementation of workplans and budgets, regular monitoring and evaluation,

technical and financial reporting, while ensuring compliance with donor

requirements and regulations;

·        
Represent IPPF ARO during steering committee

meetings and in project working groups and planning meetings; liaise with

project partners and the lead agency;

·        
Mentor and supervise a small advocacy team;

·        
Initiate and strengthen dialogue with regional

economic blocs (EAC, SADC, ECOWAS etc) and international organizations in order

to increase their interest for and engagement in sexual and reproductive health

and rights issues;

·        
Carry our budget and policy analyses and power

mapping at regional level, and supervise national assessments in Kenya, Uganda,

Senegal and Zimbabwe;

·        
Develop, implement and monitor a regional advocacy

strategy and supervise and monitor national advocacy strategies;

·        
Develop and update calendar of events of all

regional processes (in particular AU, EAC, SADC, WAHO, etc processes, Summits

and Conferences) that might impact on SRHR;

·        
Spearhead an active role for IPPF’s participation

at the relevant meetings and processes;

·        
Develop a strategy of briefing the SMT, MAs on

emerging issues, trends and developments world-wide in the area of sexual and

reproductive health;

·        
The incumbent will also develop advocacy materials

and tools;

·        
Build and strengthen advocacy capacity of national

CSOs and networks through inception meetings, advocacy capacity building

meetings, regular coaching and supervision;

·        
Build and strengthen positive working relationships

with all members of staff, and contacts within and outside the Federation.

·        
Become familiar with the Federation’s Health and

Safety Programme and Guidelines for using Visual Display Units. To do

everything possible to ensure a healthy and safe working environment, including

following instructions and guidance.

Carry out any other duties as assigned by the

Manager, External Relations and Advocacy.

Qualifications,

Skills and Experience: 

·        
The ideal candidate should preferably hold a Post

graduate degree in social sciences, management and/or communications.

·        
A minimum of seven years’ experience in

international development to include advocacy, resource mobilization, with three

to five years’ experience at management level.

·        
Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·        
Possess excellent presentation skills. .

·        
Excellent interpersonal skills to maintain and

develop positive relationships.

·        
Tactful and diplomatic with strong influencing and

negotiating skills.

·        
Flexible, team player

·        
Strong leadership and people management skills.

·        
Excellent IT skills.

·        
Fluency in either English or French is essential,

with a working knowledge of the other language.

·        
Knowledge of Portuguese an advantage.

·        
Strong networking skills.

·        
Effective report writing and presentation skills

·        
Previous experience in budget and policy analysis

·        
Prior exposure and experience in developing

political briefs and advocacy tools

·        
Previous experience in advocacy capacity building

and network building

·        
Working experience and knowledge of SRHR policy

framework in sub-Saharan Africa and at international level

·        
Strong project cycle management experience

including monitoring and evaluation, budgeting, financial and technical reporting.
