Natural resource managers (including forestry, water and coastal and fisheries)

 VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.

Your skills could help communities in the world’s poorest countries. Each year, hundreds of people complete rewarding placements as VSO volunteers in more than 40 countries.

Many rural communities rely heavily on their surrounding natural resources for their living. Managing these resources in a better way can help communities to plan for the future and secure a more sustainable living. Rural communities need technical assistance in forestry management, water management, coastal and fisheries management and natural resource management. Your advice and experience will help to improve their natural resources sustainability rates.

Duties: To provide technical expertise (in your specialist field) and support and develop initiatives with local communities, community organisations and government. Implementing strategies to manage and protect natural resources and develop local enterprise at a community level.

Skills: Natural resource management, strategising, planning and management, advocacy skills, communications skills, enterprise development, income generation.

Knowledge: Fisheries management methods, water or coastal management methods, forestry management and planning, participatory approach, community work, micro-finance.

You could be working in Mongolia, Uganda and Zambia.

As a VSO volunteer you will live and work at the heart of the community, living in similar conditions as your local colleagues. Apart from accommodation, you will receive a monthly living allowance, health insurance, return flight, pre-depature training, support from staff in country and a resettlement package.
