SNV Netherlands Development Organisation on behalf of the International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC) is looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fi ll the position of Research Officer for the Sustainable Services at Scale (Triple-S) Project in Uganda.
Triple-S is a multicountry research and learning initiative that seeks to pilot and test new ways of improving the delivery of rural water service delivery and identifying and understanding the key challenges and bottlenecks therein.
The Research Officer is one of the team members of a multi-disciplinary Uganda country team. He/she reports hierarchically and functionally to the Triple-S Uganda Country Coordinator and will be responsible for the oversight and coordination of all research and knowledge management activities.
Main responsibilities
• Coordinating research activities within the Triple-S framework and in the context of the IRC Uganda Country programme
• Managing the research work: providing guidance and oversight to partners and consultants, preparing regular research progress reports, carrying out presentations and publications on the research work.
• Participating and contributing to the global research work of the Triple-S initiative
• Undertaking duty travels in Uganda and abroad related to research and study activities, presentation of the work and coordination with the other researchers of Triple-S Qualifications, Experience and skills
• A PhD or MA or MSc in Sociology, Engineering, Water Resources Management, Environment, Geography or related field, but with proven research ability
• 3-5 years’ experience in action research or learning, knowledge management and documentation in multi-stakeholder processes, preferably with government and NGOs in the WASH, both at national and decentralised levels
• Good knowledge of the main concepts and trends and developments in the WASH/IWRM sector.
• Able to design realistic and strong research protocols including formulating good research questions, research methodologies, questionnaires and working with participatory research methodologies and applied research approaches
• Proven management experience and capacity to work independently and under pressure
• Computer literate (knowledge of Ms word, Excel and PowerPoint), preferably also with statistical packages (i.e. SPSS), databases and GIS
• A team player with excellent communication, writing and interpersonal skills Other Requirements
• Willingness to travel both within Uganda country and internationally
• Ugandan nationality
• Fluency in English in speaking, reading and writing Job Demand: This is a technical position and requires: self-motivation, commitment and discipline, management and analytical skills, a mature sense of responsibility and providing guidance to research assistance and other project and partner staff.
The researcher’s attitude for this post is also key: he/ she should be critical, independent, structured and able to ask the key questions.
Contract Period and Remuneration: The position will be on a two year renewable contract, subject to good performance.
