Jobs in the HIV drug resistance project
We are looking for candidates to fill the following posts:
1. SCIENTIST (1 Post)
The incumbent will report to the HIV drug resistance Laboratory Director. This person will:
Work with the Laboratory Director and other staff to make sure the laboratory gets accredited and maintains accreditations.
Prepare for audits where needed.
Participate in setting up systems that will allow the collection of specimens and other information for drug resistance testing under the various protocols that will be implemented.
Supervise technicians within the laboratory.
Make sure laboratory staff work under recommended safety, including disposal of laboratory waste.
Work with data staff to establish and maintain the Drug Resistance database.
Write reports, present data and write manuscripts.
Attend scientific meetings including working with WHO ResNetLab Network.
Assist those developing protocols in Virology.
Work in the area of viral load relevant to this programme.
Ensure that work on drug resistance and findings fit well into the overall HIV Quality Assurance and Control.
Work with other collaborators such as those at UVRI involved in related work ie. MRC and CDC.
Qualifications and experience:
Minimum of a Masters Degree in Virology, Molecular Virology or other related sciences is preferred.
At least two years experience in molecular techniques such as sequencing and sequence data analysis.
Good oral and written communication skills will be required. Salary will depend on qualifications and experience.
2. LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST (2 Posts)
This person will:
Perform assays and other work as directed by the Scientist and Laboratory Director, eg. Sample collection, transportation, processing, storage, RNA extraction and sequencing.
Follow GCLP, including proper labeling of specimens.
Implement the LIMS system
Prepare for audits and work and collaborate with other Laboratory Technologists at UVRI and other laboratories in the country involved in similar work.
Perform assays to fulfill the different protocols such as Transmission Threshold Surveillance, monitoring at treatment sites, etc.
Be involved in the preparation of consumables and equipment and proper maintenance of equipment.
Qualifications and experience:
An Honors Degree in Biological Sciences from a recognized University. At least two years experience in laboratories involved in similar work.
Experience in Molecular techniques will be an added advantage.
Salary will depend on qualification and experience.
