Uganda: Managing Director
Uganda Village Project (UVP) promotes public health and sustainable development in the rural communities of this marginalized district in southeast Uganda. As an international nonprofit organization, we work directly with community members, community based organizations (CBOs) and local government to utilize local knowledge and maximize community ownership. Our core program, "Healthy Villages," is an innovative, grassroots approach to addressing rural healthcare and public health in Uganda. Its goal is to improve the provision of healthcare and of preventative health education to underserved populations across rural Iganga District.
The Managing Director is the leader of UVP's staff in Uganda and ensures the programming, finances, human resources, and other Ugandan-side needs of the organization are being met. The Managing Director has the responsibility of trying to look ahead to foresee the organization's needs, and to see what areas need improvement or development. This is an opportunity to work with a young, small and flexible, vibrant organization that has been growing quickly.
Required skills and experience:
• Master's degree in Public Health, graduate degree in nonprofit management, or other Master's level degree (must be in a related field)
• Adaptability, creativity
• Strong leadership skills and experience
• Extensive (minimum 1 year) work or volunteer experience in a developing country or resource poor environment
• Experience in program management
• English fluency including superior communication skills (oral and written)
• Strong computer literacy, comfort with Microsoft Office programs, and ability to successfully use social networking websites to promote our activities. Experience with the Google for Business suite is a plus.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of partners and stakeholders
• Ability to balance and prioritize a variety of tasks concurrently
• Basic accounting skills for budget projections and financial record-keeping.
• Negotiation and conflict management skills
• High level of energy and commitment
• Experience with grant writing and program monitoring and evaluation are pluses.
This two-year contract position is located in a small town in Uganda with an equivalent moderate salary. In addition to the monthly stipend, the Managing Director receives housing, utilities, local health insurance, all visa/work permit costs, and some relocation expenses. We are looking for a candidate to start in late November 2014.
