About US:

Following the signing of the Lusaka Ceasefire Agreement in July 1999 between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and five regional States (Angola, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda and Zimbabwe) in July 1999, the Security Council established the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) by its resolution 1279 of 30 November 1999, initially to plan for the observation of the ceasefire and disengagement of forces and maintain liaison with all parties to the Ceasefire Agreement. Later in a series of resolutions, the Council expanded the mandate of MONUC to the supervision of the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement and assigned multiple related additional tasks.



Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
Under the overall supervision of the Chief ICT Operations Officer and

the supervision of the ICT Operations Officer at the location the Information

Systems Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Carry out second-level desktop

    troubleshooting in conjunction with the Mission Wide Service Desk.

  • Render support in routine installation,

    configuration, testing and deployment of server hardware and software,

    including Local Area Network, Operating Systems, Electronic mail, Unix,

    Linux, Lotus Notes, Citrix, Database systems, Internet Web software,

    firewall, Domain Name Server (DNS), DHCP, mail relay, and various security

    software.

  • Assist in monitoring personal computers

    running UN software delivery system to ensure that software distributions

    are being delivered correctly.

  • Responsible for service installation and

    support receive and log problem calls or service requests in the automated

    tracking system with minimum delay;

  • Perform tasks related to scheduled service

    requests, including equipment replacement, equipment

    installation/de-installation, software installation, LAN connection, returns

    to stock, etc.

  • Provide basic training to end-users on the

    use of standard systems; Log all actions in the automated tracking system,

    including site survey information, steps taken to resolve problem or to

    complete task, problems encountered, current status, etc.

  • Perform any other duties as required by the Chief

    ICT Operations Officer and the ICT Operations Officer


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations

    Entebbe Support Base (ESB) Information Systems Assistant job opportunity

    should hold a High School Diploma or equivalent. Supplemental

    courses/technical certificate information technology or supplemental

    training on the changes in information technology is highly desirable

  • A minimum of seven years of relevant experience

    in the information technology field. Working knowledge of the UN

    information technology infrastructure and systems and of the UN

    organization is desirable.

  • Possession of a valid national driver’s

    license is required.

  • Language: Fluency in English

    (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another official UN

    language is an added advantage.
     

  • Professionalism: Knowledge of information technology

    and applications, including computer system networks. Good technical

    skills, ability to conduct network maintenance, provide server services

    and user support. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates

    professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious

    and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving

    results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows

    persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm

    in stressful situations. Commitment to implementing the goal of gender

    and men in all aspects of work.

  • Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available

    technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the

    work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate

    tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.

  • Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services

    are provided to be “clients” and seeks to see things from clients’ point

    of view; establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by

    gaining their trust and respect; identifies clients’ needs and matches

    them to appropriate solutions; monitors on-going developments inside and

    outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems;
