Organization: United Nations Regional Service Centre Entebbe (RSCE)Vacancy Announcement Number: RSCE-2014-ES-GS-001Reports to: Field Engineering OfficerThe Regional Service Centre Steering Committee is the decision-making body for RSCE, in compliance with General Assembly resolutions, United Nations Secretariat rules and regulations, strategic guidance from United Nations Headquarters and oversight bodies. The Steering Committee consults with the Global Field Support Strategy Implementation Coordination Team, as required.The Regional Service Centre, as approved by the Member States, is owned, managed and staffed by the regional missions it serves. This framework reinforces the existing missions’ chain of command structures and lines of authority in a manner that does not create an additional layer between Headquarters and the regional missions. It also ensures that staffing for RSCE will be achieved through the redeployment of resources from the regional missions it serves.Key Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direction and supervision of the Field Engineering Officer, the Engineering Technician will perform the following tasks:Draft technical drawings of proposed new and maintenance works.Manage sites of both maintenance and new constructions.Responsible for the day-to-day operations of building sites, including leading and managing crew leaders in coordination with other supervising staff.Deliver consistent and high quality work by utilizing industry standard methodologies and materials.Make sure that the building site has proper tools and materials needed for the day’s tasks.Intuitively review and offer suggestions to the raised/approved work orders and implement with little or minimal supervision.Comply and adhere to safety policy and practices, and create a positive and encouraging work atmosphere.Available after hours, as is reasonable, for emergencies.Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  The ideal candidate for the aforementioned United Nations job should hold a High school certificate or equivalent plus Ordinary Diploma in Civil Engineering.Four or more years’ experience in site supervision and drafting. Past exposure and experience in civil engineering repairs and remodeling is crucial.Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in oral and written French is an added advantage.Professionalism: Ability to make appropriate linkages in work requirements and anticipate next steps. Understands all aspects of the building process and reads drawings expertly.Communication - Proven communication skills; oral and written, including ability to prepare a range of reports and communications using various IT applications.Teamwork: Ability to make meaningful working relationships with others in the team.
