Health & Safety Officer. – Mota-Engil Africa | - 2015



Typical Functions
• To work proactively with the Health and Safety Manager to establish and maintain a system that promotes a culture of safe working practices across the organization


• To ensure the organization complies with current safety legislation approved codes of practice and guidance in relation to employment and service provision.


• To provide first aid training to employees in regard to Safety.
• To ensure the company’s Safety Policy is implemented consistently across the site project.


• To monitor, evaluate and review Safety policy and practice, make recommendations and implement new policies and procedures as required.


• To assist in the identification of safety training needs for employees and develop and deliver training as required.


• To advise the Health and Safety Manager on the implications of current and
emerging safety legislation, including evaluating options, making recommendations and generating actions plans to ensure compliance across the Organization.


• To support the Health and Safety Manager to maintain safe systems, providing specialist advice, coaching and practical support.


• To assist the Health and Safety Manager in implementing safety systems and procedures to meet specific requirements, such as accident reporting and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) in a consistent and effective manner.


• To carry out audits to evaluate the effectiveness of Safety systems and procedures, and identify and implement improvements.


• To ensure routine safety activities and checks are carried out e.g. testing of portable electrical appliances and the review of risk assessments.


• To investigate, or where appropriate, to assist others to investigate the circumstances and causes of accidents and take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence.


• Take action to mitigate the impact and likelihood of safety risks.


• To undertake any other duties as required by management, commensurate with the grade of the post.



• Maintain a daily log recording all health issues and events following Incident Reporting procedure as may be advised by health and safety Manager.
• Conduct daily inspections and weekly compliance audits of all work places;
• Submit a weekly report to the Health and Safety Manager documenting the inspections and audits conducted during the week, any incidents and complaints and the corrective actions taken;
• Attend project meetings and Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) meetings.


Monthly tasks:
• Submit a monthly report to the Health and Safety Manager;
• Attend monthly project meetings and SHE meetings.


Ongoing activities:
• Implement the HIV/AIDS management plan and procedure on the site and sensitize the nearby community.
• Prepare and conduct awareness training to workers in the site (e.g. posters, tool box talks, signage)
• Plan and notify the Health and Safety Manager of any problems, changes or amendments that may be required;
• Provide First Aid training to workers on the site.
• Communicate with the locals in area of our operations in regard to health to manage community and employee social behavior.
• Liaison with the Safety Officer and Environment Officer to promote concerted effort.
• Inspect and report on health incidents and check corrective action;
• Attend and participate in any health related incident enquiries about our employees;
• Conduct induction programs for all new contractors and subcontractors to site and for all first-time visitors;
• Assist the Site Manager and Health and Safety with liaison with external bodies on health matters;
• Attendance at any stakeholder meetings if required;
• Implementation of workers health -related actions arising out of the scheduled meetings


Adhoc Duties
• Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by immediate supervisor in accordance with job roles, company policy and/ or prevailing conditions.



Profile
• Five to eight years’ experience in construction, preferably in multinational environment;
• Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation and of OHSAS 18001- Health & Safety Management ISO accreditation.
• Good communication skills;
• Good IT skills, specially Microsoft Excel and Word
