Innovations for Poverty

Action (IPA) is an international non-profit research organization based in New

Haven, CT, with offices in Washington, D.C. and worldwide. IPA discovers and

promotes effective solutions to global poverty problems. IPA designs,

rigorously evaluates, and refines these solutions and their applications

together with decision-makers to ensure that the evidence created is used to

improve opportunities for the world’s poor. Since our founding in 2002, IPA has

worked with over 350 leading academics to conduct over 450 evaluations in 51

countries. This research has informed hundreds of successful programs that now

impact millions of individuals worldwide.


Job Summary: The Senior Research Associate will oversee

an evaluation to test whether the positive impacts on child mortality and

health outcomes demonstrated in the first phase Living Goods evaluation can be

sustained as the project gets scaled-up. The position offers an opportunity to

gain first-hand field management experience in an organization undertaking

cutting-edge development research. The Senior Research Associate will work

closely with researchers and other field staff to perform a variety of tasks

including, but not limited to: designing survey questionnaires, running pilot

exercise, refining study design and surveying instruments, managing survey

teams, negotiating contracts with survey firms, checking and analyzing data,

cleaning data and assisting in preliminary analysis, assisting in the writing

of project reports and policy memos, and coordinating with key government

partners.


Key Duties and

Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible

    for implementing Computer Assisted Interviewing (CAI) for surveys

  • Actively

    support the development and piloting of survey instruments; manage translation

    into local languages

  • In

    charge of logistics management of a large-scale field experiment,

    including managing budgets, timelines, contract worker payroll, and

    procurement

  • Manage

    the data entry and assist in data cleaning and analysis

  • Ensure

    adherence to data quality protocols, including auditing enumerators,

    monitoring data collection, and conducting data quality audits

  • Actively

    participate in meetings with key stakeholders and present research

    findings

  • Write

    and submit reports detailing research findings and proposed interventions

  • Oversee

    funding and human subjects approval applications, and ensure that all

    necessary approvals are in place

  • Maintain

    compliance with all company policies and procedures

  • Perform

    related duties as assigned by supervisor


Qualifications, Skills and

Experience:

  • The

    ideal candidate for the Senior Research Associate (Living Goods) should

    hold a bachelor’s degree in economics, social sciences, public policy, or

    related fields. Possession of a master’s degree is an added advantage.

  • One

    to two years of research experience

  • Excellent

    management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills

  • Past

    experience living in a developing country is an added advantage

  • Fluency

    in English with strong communication skills

  • Working

    knowledge of Stata (strongly preferred) or other data analysis software is

    preferred

  • Familiarity

    with randomized controlled trials is desired

  • Proven

    ability to manage enumerator teams and survey operations at different

    levels (programming and data flow, financial budgeting and reporting,

    human resources and team building)

  • Flexible,

    self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team

    player

  • Proven

    ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations
