Abt Associates is an international development organization composed of
dedicated professionals who provide technical assistance, research, analysis,
and practical training services in more than 128 countries.
The USAID-funded Uganda IRS Project’s objective is to conduct an
ambitious spraying program and establish the foundation for sustainable,
effective, high-quality IRS activities.
Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Environment Compliance
Officer Manager and project leadership, the Environmental Compliance Officer is
responsible for overseeing program compliance with United States Government
(USG) and Government of Uganda environmental regulations, and program adherence
to requirements as laid out in USAID Initial and Supplemental Environmental
Assessments and Pesticide Evaluation Report and Safer Use Action Plan (PERSUAP)
and its amendments.
Job Summary: The job
holders will focus on the management of mosquito insectary for the purposes of
rearing of susceptible malaria vectors (An. gambiae s.s.) for IRS entomological
monitoring/studies and research activities as directed by the responsible
officers.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain and care on a daily basis the
insectary and the animal (rabbit) house - Feed mosquitoes and the rabbits
- Make sure that enough susceptible
mosquitoes are available for entomological monitoring activities whenever
needed - Ensure that rabbits are readily available
and healthy for feeding the mosquitoes - Guarantee that the insectary and the
animal (rabbit) house are clean - Ensure at all times that there are no
crawling, walking, flying or resting insects or spiders in the insectary
other than larval and adult mosquitoes in cages - Actively monitor the correct temperature
and relative humidity in the insectary - Dress, care and maintain the mosquito
cages - Ensure that the towels, cages and larval
dishes are clean - Ensure the availability of consumables for
the mosquitoes and rabbits - Budget for and request for the necessary
consumables for the insectary - Restrict the unauthorized entry of
visitors/personnel into the insectary and animal house - Be available at the insectary everyday especially
in the mornings and evenings - Keep the inventory and proper records of
the insectary - Care for and protect the properties of the
insectary - Observe ethical and professional conduct
according to the School of Entomology and Parasitology and Ministry of
Health ethics - Observe confidentiality of the insectary
data - Report any challenges encountered in the
interest of the insectary immediately to Abt Associates/Gulu University - Document any lessons learnt regarding the
proper maintenance and functioning of the insectary - Should at all times not use the insectary
or animal house for personal use or gain
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The Insectary Technician should preferably
hold a Diploma in Entomology and Parasitology - A minimum of two years’ relevant
experience in insectary management and related entomology activities
preferred - Possess the ability to take initiative,
make appropriate decisions and manage insectary effectively - Advanced written and oral skills in
English.
