Established in 1988, the
MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS is an internationally recognized center
of excellence for research on HIV infection and related diseases, contributing
knowledge on the revolving epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care
options, treatment and prevention, and the development of health policy and
practice in Africa and worldwide. The Unit’s head offices are located at the
Uganda Virus Research Institute- Entebbe Campus, and the main research
activities in Masaka, Kalungu, Kampala and Wakiso districts, including the
peri-urban areas of Entebbe.
About IAVI Research Project:
MRC is conducting a 12 months
study to evaluate the role of biometric fingerprinting technology in enhancing
study retention and estimating community level HIV incidence among mobile
individuals. The study will be implemented through repeated census and
community HIV testing linked to unique finger print identifiers. The study is
funded by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).
Job Summary: The Field
Worker / Interviewer will be in charge of collecting accurate data under
standard ethical procedures for field studies and participate in community
mobilisation.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:
- Ensure
full understanding of objectives, procedures, risks and benefits of
participation by volunteers. - Significantly
contribute to effective mobilization of the study population and provide
feedback to communities on study results. - Provide
study information and confirm consent is obtained for the study - Obtain
informed consent, if not already obtained - Actively
facilitate group education sessions about study requirements - The
Interviewer will administer study questionnaire/other study tools (as may
be required) to the study participants - Scan
participants’ fingerprints and securely store in a database. - Update
study village maps using GPS annually to document changes over time and
feed data into census and survey data bases. - Resolve
queries whenever there is need to do so. - Transcribe
and translate data from selected studies, as may be required by the
Project leader - The
Field Worker will complete laboratory requisition forms and obtain laboratory
samples from participants according to protocol specifications, as may be
required.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
- The
Field Worker/Interviewer should hold a diploma in related field from a
recognizable institution. Possession of a Degree in a related field will
be desirable. - A
minimum of three or more years’ experience in data collection and/or data
entry, familiar with use of GPS and drawing maps and using fingerprint
scanners. - Prior
experience in community engagement is an added advantage. - Working
knowledge and use of the Local language of study area (Luganda), computer
skills, communication skills, motorbike riding, Use of GPS, Arch GIS - Data
management courses are desired
