Water Resources Modeler , Nile Basin Initiative - 2015

Water Resources Modeler , Nile Basin Initiative

The Nile-Sec intends to employ the services of a Water Resources Modeller to strengthen its Water Resources Management Department, in general, and implement the water resources management program of NBI.

i) Scope of work

Provide expertise in the development of DSS new add-ons and lead their development, testing and integration
Contribute to DSS user community activities through sharing of experiences, providing training, and resolution of DSS use related issues
Conduct periodic technical workshops and trainings on the application of the NB-DSS
Provide analytical support including compilation and quality assuring water resources and related data, developing model setups, scenario analysis and evaluation of strategic options for water resources management
Contribute to the preparation of strategic papers, including supporting technical analysis and review of working papers.
Contribute to the modeling impacts of Climate Change on hydrology of the Nile Basin and development of Climate Change resilient water resources development and management options
Provide technical/analytic inputs to the preparation of knowledge products;
Contribute to the preparation of training modules on water resources modeling and use of NB DSS
Supervise consultants’ performance to ensure the relevance and quality, including reviewing of technical documents.

ii) Qualifications and experience

· At least Masters level degree in water resources systems engineering, hydro-informatics, hydrology (with focus on water resources modeling) or closely related fields.
· In-depth knowledge and understanding of surface water hydrology and hydrologic modeling technologies, with special emphasis on large-basin hydrologic modeling.
· Proficiency in an advanced programming language; such as (C++, Visual Basic, and Java) is a significant advantage.
Five (5) years of qualifying experience (after MSc degree) in river basin modeling, with focus on water balance modeling, water allocation, simulation of river-reservoir systems involving key water use systems (such as hydropower, irrigation), flood control benefits of regulation systems, rainfall-runoff modeling and optimization modeling.
· Familiarity with hydrodynamic modeling of river systems is a significant advantage.
· Demonstrated expertise with at least two water resources modeling software packages is a requirement.
Experience in formulation and solving optimization problems in water resources
Five (5) years experience in the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in water resources.
· Knowledge of routine statistical methods.
· Strong multi-cultural and inter-personnel skills; experience in working in multidisciplinary team is a significant advantage.
· Demonstrated technical writing, analytical, presentation and reporting skills.
· Strong English language skills (spoken and written); working knowledge of French is an advantage.
· Experience working with or in regional/international organizations is an advantage.
· Experience working in Africa, particularly the Nile Basin countries, is preferred.
