Volunteer Opportunity description
Our partner is committed to helping build a productive computer services industry in Uganda. By teaching computer and internet technologies to local people, they aim to increase personal incomes and boost the local econo
my. It also sets an example for other NGOs, businesses, and government organizations to join in and help grow this industry.
There are about 35 million people living in Uganda, with a median age of 15 years. Providing appropriate education for its young population is one of the most crucial challenges the Ugandan government faces. We to complement the existing education system by making computers available to people of all ages, providing customized training, and encouraging and supporting the formation of Information Communication Technology businesses. Our partner operates innovative training programs in schools, libraries, and community centres. In 2012 it opened a training center in Mukono for students wishing further technology education.
Main projects:
1) Primary and Secondary school mobile training unit: From Monday to Friday they visit different primary and secondary schools in the Mukono area. They have a mobile solar computer classroom in which to teach pupils and their teachers the proper handling of computers. Thanks to these mobile classrooms they are bringing the building blocks of computer literacy to hundreds of school children every week.
2) Advanced Training Center: Here, older students and adults learn a wide range of computer and business skills applicable to real-world jobs. Information not often taught in Ugandan schools. The centre is open during school holidays, and on evenings and weekends.
3) Community Libraries: They are working with Ugandan Community Library Association to teach local farmers basic computer skills and information access training. Partnering with rural libraries, farmers now have access to critical agricultural information. This enables them to improve their crop production and increase the worth of their products.
As a volunteer, your responsibilities are to:
Work with staff to teach computer skills to youth and adults in Mukono District, Uganda;
Document training exercises through photography, blogging and website updates to raise the organization’s profile locally and internationally;
Work with the Founder to identify new methods of instruction, specifically ways to promote computer literacy for those with limited computer access (robust training courses that offer off-line opportunities to study/learn)
