Position Summary


The Uganda USAID fund has three components focusing on judiciary, media and civil society. In respect of the judiciary, the activity seeks to support interventions contributing to human rights jurisprudence through continuous professional development, legal aid for indigent women, youth and persons with disabilities, public outreach and public interest litigation. Regional peer exchange programs intended to share experiences on economic, social and cultural rights and regional mechanisms will also be supported. Within the civil society sector, the activity will support training of civil society activists in areas such as human rights monitoring and documentation, policy development, social marketing, communications and strategy development, platforms for engagement between civil society and the Government of Uganda, such as the human rights working group, portfolio committee and Universal Periodic Review. Media component will focus on media practitioners to enhance their knowledge and skills to better monitor, advocate against and report on abuses of public authority and human rights violations, which will contribute to greater accountability for state and non-state institutions.


The Internship position offers an opportunity to gain experience in program administration, program and activity implementation, activity development, USAID financial rules and regulations, and Freedom House program methodology. He/she will work collaboratively with the Rights and Rule of Law team and be given meaningful opportunities to add value to program initiatives and projects. He/she will demonstrate knowledge of human rights and a strong academic or professional interest and career aspirations related to the human rights or rule of law, civil society advocacy and freedom of expression. This unpaid internship position has two openings, is based in Kampala and reports to the Deputy Chief of Party.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Must have graduated or be enrolled in an accredited college or university in law, social studies or mass communication

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing

  • Interest in human rights, rule of law, media, civil society, democracy and/or international development relations

  • Basic research and editing skills of reports, publications and studies

  • Computer literate, including proficiency with MS Office Suite

  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with others and work as an effective team member

  • Knowledge of basic office administration and financial management preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assist with administrative, financial and logistical support for day-to-day functioning of programs, including travel and events

  • Assist with maintenance of organizational contacts

  • Attend relevant events and other external meetings as necessary and provide readout to team members

  • Assist with background research needed for proposals and program activities reports

  • Assist with other related projects as needed.
