POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Private Sector Partnerships Specialist -Uganda Youth Leadership for Agriculture Project
LOCATION: Kampala, Uganda
UNIT: Education & Empowerment
REPORTS TO: Chief of Party (CoP)
PROGRAM SUMMARY:
The purpose of the Youth Leadership for Agriculture Activity is to increase economic opportunities for hundreds of thousands of Ugandan female and male youth ages 10 to 35 in agriculture-related fields in order to increase incomes and build entrepreneurship, leadership, and workforce readiness. The capacity of selected workforce institutions and value chain actors will be strengthened to ensure sustainability of youth outcomes.
Position is contingent upon receipt of donor funding.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for technical leadership and oversight for activities which will pursue and foster a facilitative market systems approach to leverage private sector actors. The approach will improve relationships and networks among value chain actors and youth (ages 15-35) and use strategic investments and incentives to encourage private sector actors to provide technical assistance, training, mentoring, as well as increased market (both input and output) opportunities for large numbers of youth. This will involve developing relationships between private sector actors such as input suppliers or exporters and youth to improve their access to markets and enable youth to join and extract benefits from the value chain.
In line with the labor market demands in the agricultural sector, the Private Sector Partnerships Specialist will investigate the needs and skill requirements of employers in select value chains and help them to link youth to those employment opportunities along selected agricultural value chains. Will also focus on stimulating market actors in a manner that encourages systemic changes while not creating dependency. Will make linkages to ongoing, win-win private sector initiatives underway in Uganda which expands youth involvement in agricultural value chains while meeting the private sector needs.
QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND:
Education: Minimum of Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Business, International Development, Public Policy, Law, or other relevant field. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with ten (10) years of experience may be substituted for a Master’s degree.
Experience: Minimum of six (6) years of international experience in business or agriculture development. Must have excellent track record of achieving results in similar private sector-led development activities preferably in agriculture.
Skills: Demonstrated high level technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
Excellent computer skills (word processing and spreadsheets) are required.
Must have strong English written and oral communication skills.
