Network Engineer – Kampala – UbuntuNet Alliance




About US:
UbuntuNet Alliance is a Regional Organization of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in Eastern and Southern Africa. It is an alliance of currently 16 NRENs in the region that work together to promote internetworking for purposes of research and innovation.
The Alliance plans, builds and manages UbuntuNet, the regional research and education data network which currently has points of presence (POPs) in Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Kigali, Maputo, Mtunzini Nairobi, London, and Amsterdam.


Job Summary: The Network Engineer will provide support in the day-to-day management of the network.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as the direct liaison with the Network Operator in day-to- day operations of the UbuntuNet network
Direct liaison with member NREN Chief Technical Officers (CTOs) in the development and review of network operations
In charge of scheduling planned maintenance activities in liaison with the Network Operator
Proactive monitoring of service levels and security to ensure service level agreements (SLAs) are met
Ensuring compliance with the UbuntuNet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)
Design, implementation and management of new networks and services
Working with contractors in the field in rolling out networks and services
Provision of direct support as specified in all activities by the Technical Manager


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The Network Engineer should ideally hold a Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or equivalent from a recognized university; and either registered or eligible for registration as a professional engineer.
A minimum of six years’ experience as a network engineer or administrator, four of which must be in management of large carrier class IP networks.
Advanced knowledge of Internet routing protocols
Good knowledge of the design, installation and operation of large IP networks
Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise contractors in network rollout
Advanced knowledge of the Unix/Linux operating environment
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Output-oriented work habits
Initiative and innovation
