The
United Nations Entebbe Support Base (UNESB) was established by MONUSCO
(formerly MONUC) in May 2003 with 30 staff occupying 500sqm on the Entebbe
International Airport to provide logistics and operational support to Eastern
DRC. Since its establishment, the proven operational capabilities of this
facility coupled with the strategic location to neighboring missions, the
reliable logistic infrastructure and the political stability of Uganda were all
valuable considerations which prompted the expansion of ESB to its current
capacity.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the OIC Special
Investigations Unit, the incumbent will undertake the following duties:
- The incumbent will attend to all
incidents/accidents within and outside the base and take appropriate
action to ensure safety of UN staff & properties. - Take photographs and make sketches of the
scene. - Regularly interview witnesses and suspects.
- Gather all relevant facts and exhibits from
the scene or elsewhere. - Work closely with relevant sections and the
local authorities (police & military) to get information. - Ensure accurate report writing and timely
completion and submission on all cases assigned. - Periodically assigned to be on call or
standby duty Investigator. - Ensure comprehensive quality of reports
submitted. - Prepare to move to other locations outside
the mission to conduct investigations or perform other security functions
as required by the security management. - Ensure that defective equipment is reported
on time and provided to workshops for repair as necessary. - Complete the input of data of all
incidents/accident attended & train Security Personnel/Investigators
on how to input new cases into the database; - Provide crime/case statistics by the use of
figures from the database; - In charge of the periodic review of all
entries in the database and update the status of own investigations; - Render support in the checking out process of
staff in database through FSS. - Maintain a filing system in accordance with
related UN recommendations; and - Comply with administrative instructions
related to Attendance Records and Movement of Personnel. - Ability to drive manual vehicles and respond
to security emergencies. The candidate MUST have a valid driver’s license. - Perform other duties assigned by the unit
chief (SIU) or head of Security Section.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the United Nations Entebbe
Support Base (ESB) Security Assistant career opportunity should hold a High
school diploma or equivalent. Additional security or military training is
required. The applicant must have passed the United Nations Security
Officer Test (SOT). - A minimum of four years’ experience in all
areas of the security operation within the UN Security Service, including
investigation, physical security, personal protection, strategic and
operational planning, fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical
and hazardous material response, video imaging badge systems and methods
of instruction or related area. - Language: Fluency in oral and written English
is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an
advantage.
- Professionalism: Ability to perform a broad range of
administrative functions, e.g., work programme, human resources, database
management, etc. Ability to apply knowledge of various United Nations
administrative, financial and human resources rules and regulations in
work situations. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates
professional competence; is conscientious and efficient in meeting
commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional
rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult
problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations; - Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and

and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits
interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style
and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information
and keeping people informed. - Teamwork: Works collaboratively with
colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely
valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others;
places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance
with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely
reflect own position.
