The

Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an international non-profit organization

which is a partnership of infectious diseases and public health specialists.

The overall objective of the IDI is to strengthen health systems with strong

emphasis on Infectious Diseases, through Research and Capacity Development. IDI

has five operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission:

Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory services

(provided through a partnership with the Makerere University – John Hopkins

University Core Lab) and Outreach.


Infectious

Diseases Institute (IDI) received funding from Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention (CDC)/PEPFAR to implement a comprehensive HIV/AIDS services in the

mid-western Uganda Districts of Kiboga, Kibaale, Kyankwanzi, Hoima, Masindi,

Buliisa and Kiryandongo. The project is called “Accelerating Comprehensive

HIV/AIDS Service Delivery through Health System Capacity Building and Technical

Assistance of District Health Teams and Health Facilities in Western and West

Nile Regions in the Republic of Uganda under PEPFAR.”


Job Summary: The Laboratory Technologist will provide

technical support to lab staff at various government facilities.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
The jobholder will work in liaison with the District and IDI Laboratory

Outreach services, to assist in:

  • Building capacity to provide Quality HIV

    testing services in facilities and communities

  • Building capacity to provide laboratory tests

    (CD Cell Counts, Chemistry Tests, Hematology Tests, Viral Load and DNA PCR

    Tests) required for diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of HIV related Illnesses

    for adults (including pregnant women)

  • Building the capacity to provide laboratory

    tests (TB smear microscopy using florescent microscopy and

  • TB DST) required for diagnosis, treatment and

    monitoring of TB

  • Adapting to National standards and Maturation

    System based on the principles the Lab Quality

  • Management System (Organization,

    infrastructure, equipment, sample collection management, process control

    (QA/QC), documentation, infection control and safety, assessment of the

    labs customer care, process improvement and information management) and

    link the standards to the Laboratory strengthening Program

  • The incumbent will also be developing a QA/QA

    system ( internal quality control system and external quality control

    system and standard operating procedures and manuals) and ensuring their

    use in selected facilities

  • Establishing and monitoring of an Equipment

    Management and Maintenance Systems in target Laboratories

  • Establishing and monitoring a Supply Chain

    Management System and ensure timely ordering of buffer stocks for target

    labs

  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned

    by management by the Laboratory Services Specialist.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the Infectious Diseases

    Institute (IDI) Laboratory Technologist vacancy should preferably hold a Bachelor’s

    Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized educational

    institution

  • One year of related experience working in a

    laboratory recognized to be applying Good Laboratory Practices.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to

    interact productively and accurately with other team members

  • Self-motivated, innovative and capable of meeting

    dead lines

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Computer literacy skills i.e. good knowledge

    of Microsoft Office Programs

  • Good presentation and report writing skills

  • Fluency of the local languages within the

    supported districts is desirable.
