Gulu University is a Public University
established by Statutory Instrument No. 16 of 2003. The University was set to
serve as a launch pad for equitable development in Uganda providing knowledge
and skills and stimulating innovations in education, technology, economic
advancement and social development. The University is located in Gulu
Municipality with branches in Lira, Kitgum and Hoima districts.
Job
Summary: The University Librarian is the Head of the
University Library. The job holder will be responsible for the development,
control, management and coordination of all library and information services of
the University. The incumbent will also be responsible for the development,
control, management and coordination of all library and information services of
the University.
Key
Duties and Responsibilities:
·
Responsible
for the planning and implementing, in liaison with relevant Departments of the
University, the various projects and programs of the Library;
·
Familiarize
him/herself with the various programs offered by the University and liaise with
the various School Heads on issues regarding the development of the Library, to
ensure that relevant information materials are provided to the University
Community;
·
Organize
and chair meetings of the Library Committees;
·
Keep
in constant touch with developments in the world of information to ensure that
relevant and up to date information is provided to the University staff and
students;
·
The
incumbent will ensure the creation and maintenance of Library databases to
enable the University community have easy access to the University’s Information
Resource;
·
Work
in liaison with other information providing Departments such as Information
Technology Department, to ensure that information to the users is provided in a
coordinated manner;
·
In
charge of planning for Library Staff development in collaboration with the
Head, Human Resources and keep Staff abreast with developments in their
profession;
·
Mentor
and supervise Staff and hold regular staff meetings;
·
Perform
any other related duties, as may be necessary to ensure the provision of
efficient and effective Library and Information services in the University.
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:
·
The
ideal candidate must be a Ugandan holding a Master of Library and Information
Sciences (LIS) or related discipline and a PhD in Library and Information
Sciences (LIS);
·
A
minimum of twelve years working experience, three (3) of which must be at
Senior Management Level from a Reputable Organisation;
·
The
applicant must be have mentored LIS professionals by teaching or supervising
their Research work and/ or setting up LIS units;
·
The
applicant must have published at least five (5) new recognized Publications
and/ or conference papers;
·
Excellent
track record of high integrity and leadership.
·
Age: Between 45-55 years
