Agronomist / Environmentalist – Kampala – UGACOF


About US:
UGACOF Limited is a Leading Coffee Exporter in Uganda which works with smallholder coffee farmers countrywide. While Ugacof core business is buying, processing and exporting of coffee to international buyers and roasters, they work in partnership with local/national and international organizations to support smallholder coffee farmers with the aim of increasing the productivity and quality of coffee produced contributing to improved livelihoods of these smallholders.


Job Summary: The Agronomist/Environmentalist will be tasked with streamlining the upstream supply chain, increasing the quality and quantity of sustainable coffee. The incumbent will be overseeing and co-ordinating the overall activities of the department aimed at achieving maximum efficiency and professional GAP/ Environmental services to Ugacof Ltd., its staff and external stakeholders.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide professional agronomic advice and strategic support to company
Leverage all GAP across the organization and build agricultural minimum mandatory requirements
Implement the CIRAD recommendations for new varieties and intercropping.
The incumbent will implement programs that allow farmers to have access to PPE and training to ensure safe use of agricultural chemicals.
Implement protocols to track proper use of PPEs
Identify opportunities for resources efficiency for farmers mainly in water and energy.
Support the farmers aggregation programs
The jobholder will also sensitize farmers, coffee washing stations on water management, pollution prevention and waste management.
Structure further the Train-the Trainer Programs
Integrate farmers Support programs and the E&S activities required for coffee certification in the management programs.
Actively contribute to the implementation of the ESAP


Key Performance Indicators
Develop and maintain project management plans.
Work within agreed Project standards.
Manage tasks and be responsible for reporting through project structures.
Duties are carried out in a professional manner to a high standard with due care and attention to detail.
Response time to resolve technical issues.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should be a graduate with an engineering degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture with specialization in agronomy, soil & water management.
Possession of a Post graduate qualification in a relevant discipline is added advantage.
At least five to seven years’ experience in Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, managing agro-technical and environmental performance on a country level, working with farmers, agents and cooperatives in one of the countries of East Africa.
Broad working knowledge in environmental sciences, good comprehension of health and safety guidelines and experience in Environmental Management Systems according to ISO 14000 series of international standards.
