Christian University was founded when the historic Bishop Tucker Theological

College was promoted as a university in 1997. Bishop Tucker Theological College

trained clergy and educators during its 84-year history from 1913-1997. The

local chief, Hamu Mukasa, granted land for the college to operate in Mukono.

International partnerships were part of the College’s missionary history. The

Church Mission Society teamed with Ugandan leaders and others to assure the

College had the necessary intellectual and other capital. By the late 1990s,

the Church of Uganda sought to have a broader impact on society through the

higher education – not only of clergy but of other professionals as well.

Uganda Christian University was established in 1997.


Job Summary: The Head Infrastructure (Network Administrator)

will be responsible for the overall coordination and supervision of all

technical activities relating to the efficient operation of the UCU network by

other technical staff and service providers. The incumbent will oversee e the

configuration, implementation, and maintenance of the University network

infrastructure, both voice and data.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure optimum operation of the UCU network

    infrastructure that includes the Main Campus data and voice network, the

    UCU Network Operating Centre, all Local Area Networks (LANs) at UCU and

    remote campuses in Kampala, Kabale, Mbale and any others that will be set

    up.

  • Ensure reliable, adequate and cost-effective

    interconnection (voice and data) between the UCU Main campus and other

    campuses.

  • Ensure reliable and stable functioning of the

    Network Operating Center (NOC) at UCU main campus.

  • Install, configure and administer network

    services, all based on Open Source technologies

  • Install, configure, maintain network

    Equipment (mainly Cisco).

  • Responsible for all technical work relating

    to the UCU Wide-Area Network (WAN) operation and related equipment.

  • Ensure efficient access to the Internet at

    all times

  • Keep track of all technology developments

    relevant to all components of a modern WAN and to regularly provide the

    Manager, University ICT Service with information and advice on such

    changes for effective planning and decision making.

  • Coordinate and supervise all technical

    activities relating to the efficient operation of the UCU network by other

    technical staff and service providers.

  • Work closely with service providers on the

    technical aspect of the services they provide to the university and advise

    the Technical Manager appropriately.

  • Prepare and submit a monthly report on

    infrastructure activities to the Technical Manager.

  • Maintain proper documentation of Network

    Structure, Network Assets, Network problems and resolution for future

    reference.

  • Regularly monitor Network performance and

    implement performance tuning.

  • Provide periodic updates on the state of the

    Network to the Technical Manager.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the

    Manager, University ICT Services and/or Technical Manager.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the Head Infrastructure

    (Network Administrator) vacancy should hold a Master’s degree with a bias

    in Data Communications from a recognized institution of higher learning. He

    /s he should also hold a good Bachelor’s Degree (at least 2:1) in

    Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or

    Information Technology from a recognized institution of higher learning.

  • Hold professional certification in CCNA

    and/or CCNP

  • Professional certification in either MCSA or

    MCSE will be an added advantage.

  • A minimum of two years of proven work

    experience in a medium to large network environment with hands-on

    experience with networking equipment (preferably Cisco) and infrastructure

    installation.

  • Possess administrator-level skills in Windows,

    Cisco Systems, Juniper and Linux

  • Proven ability to demonstrate proficiency in

    Novell or UNIX.

  • Proficiency with Networking Equipment:

  • Proficiency in dealing with Layer III

    Switches, Routers and Ubiquiti Equipment

  • High-end Servers, Cabling, Racks, Firewalls,

    LAN, WAN troubleshooting, TCP/IP, PPP, DNS, Virtualization, Fiber Optics

    are essential

  • Good knowledge of TCP/UDP, Latency, VoIP,

    QoS, IS-IS, OSPF, BGP, NHRP, ATM and MPLS will be an added advantage.

  • Working knowledge of fail-safe power Systems

    will be an added advantage.

  • The applicant must be a committed mature and practicing

    Christian.
