Phoenix

of Uganda Assurance Company Limited (PUAL) is an Insurer with regional presence

in East Africa. PUAL is a member of the Mauritius Union Group and has offices

in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.


Job Summary: The Senior Accountant manages the Accounts team

and is responsible for oversight of all accounting systems and procedures,

including performance management, ensuring compliance with governing

regulations. The Senior Accountant is also responsible for the implementation

of accounts policies and procedures. The incumbent will work closely with the

senior management Team, in the service of ensuring that the organization meets

its goals, development and implementation of strategies and systems. The Senior

Accountant assists with preparing company financial statements duties such as cash,

cheque and records management, data analysis, vendor payments and accounting compliance

work in support of tax and office activities.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Achieves accounting operation objectives by computing

    accounting information and making recommendations for strategic plans and

    reviews; preparing and completing audits, determining system improvements

    to promote efficiency and quality.

  • Preparing and submitting periodic reports for

    management and external agencies.

  • Meets accounting financial objectives by

    forecasting requirements; preparing an annual budget for the company; scheduling

    expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.

  • Confirms financial status by monitoring

    revenue and expenses in line with departmental budgets.

  • In charge of coordinating the collection,

    consolidation, and evaluation of financial data and preparing special

    reports.

  • Updates and maintains accounting controls by

    establishing a chart of accounts; defining accounting policies and

    procedures.

  • Guides other departments by researching and

    interpreting the accounting policy; applying observations and recommendations

    to operational issues demonstrating sound judgment in decision making.

  • Maintains financial security by establishing

    internal controls.

  • Avoids legal challenges by understanding

    current and proposed legislation; enforcing accounting regulations;

    recommending new procedures.

  • Protects organization’s value by keeping

    information confidential.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational

    opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal

    networks; participating in professional organizations.

  • Accomplishes accounting and organization

    mission by completing related results as needed.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant should hold a Bachelor’s Degree

    in Finance, Accounting, or Business Management.

  • Professional accounting qualifications i.e. ACCA/CPA

  • At least three years’ management experience

    with a Financial Institution (Insurance).

  • Strong knowledge of regulatory laws.

  • Worked in an information technology enabled

    environment.
