Alliance

One International provides worldwide service to the large cigarette

manufacturers. Multinational manufacturers of consumer tobacco products rely on

independent merchants such as Alliance One to supply the majority of their

leaf. As a result, Alliance One purchases tobacco in more than 45 countries and

serves manufacturers of cigarettes and other consumer tobacco products in over

90 countries. With its global headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA,

Alliance One proudly claims broad geographic processing capabilities, a

diversified product offering, and an established customer base, which includes

all of the major consumer tobacco product manufacturers. They select, purchase,

process, pack, store, ship, and, in certain developing markets, provide

agronomy expertise and financing for growing leaf tobacco. Alliance One’s

revenues are primarily comprised of sales of processed tobacco and fees charged

for related services to manufacturers of consumer tobacco products around the

world. They do not manufacture cigarettes or other consumer tobacco products.


Job Summary: The Leaf Growing Manager will oversee tobacco

growing in Arua to ensure delivery of contracted volumes with minimum bad debt

in compliance with Alliance One Tobacco Uganda and Good Agricultural Practices

and relevant Standard Operating Procedures.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 


1. Crop Production

Planning:

  • Attends the pre-season meetings, establishes

    numbers of growers, annual volumes of tobacco and projected yield and

    contributes to the pre-season planning in line with Alliance One Tobacco

    International Agronomy Standard Operating Procedures.

  • The incumbent develops the annual financial budget

    for the Region and submits this for approval to the Head of Agronomy,

    manages the budget, and identifies and addresses variances in line with

    Alliance One Tobacco Uganda Financial Policies.

  • Visits Farmers to ensure suitability, checks

    and approves the records submitted by the Leaf Area Managers, arranges for

    Supervisors to capture the data and issue printed contracts, and ensures

    the Leaf Area Managers have obtained necessary signatures.

  • Keenly reviews crop estimation at critical

    times, manages the crop delivery in baling centre, checks that crop throw

    percentages conform to the Leaf Buying Plan, participates in regular

    training days and provides agronomic advice to the Farmers and Agronomy

    staff.

  • Acts as Company representative with Local

    Authorities and the District Tobacco Task Forces and attends relevant

    meetings.

  • Ensures company GAP/Sustainability programs

    are implemented and managed according to the company policies.


3. Loan Recovery: Keenly monitors

and ensures that the Leaf Team have recovered the required loans and volumes

from tobacco farmers.


4. Management of Regional

Agronomy Staff:

  • Regularly monitors and evaluates subordinate

    staff on a weekly basis and takes appropriate action through the Head of Agronomy

    and the HR Department.

  • Oversees the recruitment and payroll data of

    seasonal Agronomy employees in liaison with the HR Department.

  • Ensures that the Social Responsibility in

    Tobacco Production (SRTP) and Safety and Health (SHE) Policies and

    Procedures are being implemented and adhered to throughout the relevant

    Leaf and Agronomy operations.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant should hold a Degree in

    Agriculture, Environment and/or Natural Sciences from a recognised

    Tertiary Institute. Possession of a Post Graduate Degree in Business and

    General Management, Agriculture or similar is an added advantage

  • At least six to eight years’ experience in

    Tobacco, or relevant Agricultural crop growing and production; Agronomy

    and agronomic processes; Grower and farm operations; Tobacco and farmer

    electronic systems; Stakeholder engagement and management;

  • Proven ability to analyse, solve related

    problems and make accurate decisions; must be able to lead a team, with

    excellent interpersonal skills and results oriented.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

    skkills

  • Ability to innovate and manage change.
